These last decades have seen an increase in the interest of scientists for the concept of compassion. And as we know from the Bible compassion is one of the main features of God’s manifested character (Exodus 34:6) and was at the very core of Jesus earthly ministry.
In non-religious circles, compassion is usually described has being made up of several processes including:
Attention and awareness of suffering
Understanding of suffering and its causes
Intention or wish to alleviate the suffering.
These “secular” descriptions perfectly match the biblical description of God’s compassion towards captive Israel. In Exodus 3 we read how God moved with compassion for Israel is planning to help and rescue them:
I have surely seen the affliction of My people, Exo 3:7
I know their sorrows, Exo 3:7
I am coming down to deliver them…to bring them up out of that land , Exo 3:8
Among other goals, the WeCare Initiative is aimed at raising the awareness for the theological significance of compassion, showing the scientifically demonstrated benefits connected with offering and receiving compassion, calling attention to the great need for compassion in today’s society (including in health care) and offering to our members trainings inspired by Jesus’s model of ministry.
Each one of the 9 WeCare trainings is based on these 3 pillars:
Gaining awareness and understanding for some of the unseen struggles and challenges that people are facing today
Understanding the causes, risk factors, manifestations and developments of prevalent health conditions or life situations
Learning about ways to help and manifest compassion on physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual levels
