Robert Mangan,  Principal

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

Thank you to all of you who took advantage of the opportunity to engage with your sons teachers at our Caregiver / Teacher conferences, face to face on Thursday 13th May and then via Google Meet on Wednesday 19th May.  These opportunities are invaluable in order to support your son in his education here at the college.  Due to demand, a number of teachers were fully booked and we are aware that a number of you were unable to engage with your sons teachers.  I invite you to communicate via email with the subject teachers, should you have any specific concerns you wish to raise.  The email addresses of teachers are available via the parent portal on the TBC website and follow a standard format of first initial of christian name.surname@tbc.school.nz (e.g. a.smith@tbc.school.nz).  Also note that all students will receive a mid-year report on 1st July.

75th Jubilee of Tauranga College, 1945 - 1957
Rob Leslie and I had the privilege to attend a luncheon to celebrate the 75th Jubilee of Tauranga College at the Tauranga Citizens Club on Sunday 16th May.  In attendance were over 240 past pupils of the co-educational college ranging in approx. ages from 76 - 92 years old.  Due to the age of the past pupils, this was to be the final "reunion" of the college, however such was the enthusiasm for the event, there is considerable demand for another event in the future.  MP for the Bay of Plenty and Old Boy of TBC, Todd Muller was the guest speaker while I updated the guests on the current status and achievements of TBC in 2021.

Recognised amongst the alumni of Tauranga College were:
Dame Lynley Dodd, Author
Judy Keaney, QSM
Hugh McCarroll, NZOM, World Champion Shearer
Bryan Gould, CNZM, Former politician and diplomat
Mick Bremner, All Black
Pam Johnson, NZ Netball
Rebecca Faulkner, World Netball Championships
Dave Dowrick, who helped design the Sydney Opera House
Bill Ward, International musician
Paul Person, Opera singer
Michael Sandlant, Manager of the NZ Cricket team

As past pupils of Tauranga College, all alumni from the college are recognised as part of the current TBC Old Boys' Association.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards

R W Mangan
Principal
ABSNZ CONFERENCE
Our Head Prefect, Corban Laban-Palmer recently attended the Association of Boys' Schools NZ (ABSNZ) Conference in Auckland.  The conference is held each year for educators of boys' schools. These events are the meeting place for many of the leading researchers and practitioners in the field of educating young men. Mr Ian Stuart, Associate Principal, represented TBC at the conference and also attended the NZSES (NZ Super Eight Schools) meeting.  (Corban is pictured below - front row, far left)
ARTS
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

With instantly recognisable hit songs such as 'Everything's Alright', "I Don't Know How To Love Him', and the iconic theme song, Jesus Christ Superstar is the entertainment highlight of the year for Tauranga Boys' and Girls' Colleges.

Through the eyes of the betrayer, Judas Iscariot, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the last days of the man he once loved and admired.  Through Judas' eyes, the very human soul behind the divine icon is bared - troubled, doubting, loving and scared.

Nominated for eight Tony Awards and seven Olivier Awards over its almost 50 year history, the greatest rock opera ever created shines a light on the power of the human spirit.  A blazing score from Andrew Lloyd Webber, with Tim Rice's inventive and evocative lyrics, this stunning musical is still as devastatingly powerful as the first time it hit the stage.

Tickets can purchased here - https://jcsuperstar.co.nz/

FUTURE PATHWAYS
Careers, Gateway, Pacifica, Maori Achievement, Secondary-Tertiary Partnership
Pasifika
  • Practises are well underway for the Pasifika Cultural Performance group, in preparation for our upcoming Super 8 Cultural competition in Week 3 of this term. The boys will travel down to Gisbourne with the other Arts & Cultural groups to represent Tauranga Boys’ College.
  • Our Homo Haia Homework Hubs are starting up again Tuesday Week 2, and then will run every Thursday after that. They are open to everybody and allow all of our students to get help from teachers with their homework and upcoming assessments.
  • Pasifika RISE is also starting up again next week. It is a breakfast programme that is run every Monday from 6 am until just before 8am. The boys come and do a workout, eat breakfast, and listen to a motivational speaker each session. We are incredibly lucky to have food donated through the Good Neighbour programme to support this initiative.
Careers
  • University liaison staff have been presenting to our Year 13’s to help them with their tertiary planning during the first two weeks of term with all providers completing their first round visits during May. These seminars provide information on degree options, scholarships, accommodation, and give our students the opportunity to ask questions.
Gateway
  • We had 14 amazing Gateway students out on a work placement in local Countdown stores over the holidays. According to the Service IQ programme coordinator Carolyn Vincent “they all passed with flying colours”. The store managers and staff again held the Tauranga Boys’ College students work ethic and customer respect in high regard. Congratulations to the following students that attended the Gateway course and passing the 22 Level 2 SEEDS customer relations unit standards: Kahn Bennett, Felix Anderson Podmore, Zayd Fariz, Phoenix Isted-Coad, Cedric Kohu, Jayden Longstaff-Olsen, Hemi Ormsby, Jayden Paton, Redeem Smith and Bailey Twigg.

REQUESTS FOR HOLIDAYS
DURING TERM TIME
I am concerned with the number of requests I receive from parents for time off for their sons during school term to travel in New Zealand for holidays.

I understand the educational value of travel but remind parents to be mindful of the impact time away from the classroom can have on your son's academic achievement.

Of particular concern is when this absence occurs at the same time NCEA internal assessments are planned, as this can have a significant effect on your son's NCEA results.

Ministry of Education regulations only allow me to give permission for absence from school due to illness or family bereavement and advise that all trips / holidays should be taken during official school holiday periods.

I would ask that all requests for leave are sent to me at principal@tbc.school.nz

My preference is for all leave of this nature to occur during the school holidays.  Leave from school for holiday travel that is taken outside of school holiday periods will be recorded as "explained but unjustified".

Thank you for your assistance with this.

Futureproofing Cameron Road Update

Work to install a new safe signalised pedestrian crossing for Cameron Road between 13th and 15th Avenues and the accompanying no righthand turn into 14th Avenue has now been rescheduled due to delays with components.  This work was due to start late April / early May, but signal poles will not be available in the country until later in the year due to supply and freight issues from overseas.  The Council is looking to reschedule this work.
