Product Line Keeps Growing From Lavender Gardens
By The Bay Lavender recently opened a retail space in downtown Chemainus on Willow Street and have developed a wide range of products from the distinct smells of lavender depending on their origin in the world. Stores carrying their products have helped put By The Bay Lavender on the map, including 49th Parallel Grocery, Salish Sea Market and Russell Farm Market in the Chemainus area.

Greyhound Canada Cutting All Routes and Ending Operations
Greyhound Canada is cutting all bus routes across the country. The company says it’s shutting down its intercity operations in Canada after nearly a century of service.

Central Island Indigenous Youth Seeks Employer Partners
Kw’umut Lelum has launched the Step Up Work Placement Program to empower Indigenous youth from Qualicum to Malahat to seek employment and develop job skills. Step Up is looking for employers to participate in the program. Any businesses in the Central Island area that want to support Indigenous youth with entry-level employment are encouraged to reach out to the Step Up program at kmckinley@kwumut.org.

BC's Latest COVID-10 Restrictions Cost Thousands of Service Jobs
B.C.’s loss of 43,000 jobs in April is almost entirely due to the COVID-19 “circuit breaker” restrictions on travel, accommodation and dining imposed at the end of March to stop the biggest-ever spike in infections and serious illness.

RDN Has Sights Set on Transit Between Nanaimo and Cowichan Valley
If the transit select committee gives approval, the recommendations will be forwarded to the board for its May 25 meeting. The steps after that would include asking B.C. Transit to commit to the vehicles and then working on cost-sharing and scheduling agreements between the regional districts.

Proposal Seeks to Bring More Commercial Space to Sooke
There are approximately 750 businesses in Sooke. Many are home-based and the Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce says the lack of commercial space is holding many businesses back.

Auto Dealership Planned for Westshore to be One of Island's Largest
The dealership, will employ about 100 people overall, with 16 staff in an area solely dedicated to virtual sales, a growing side of the business that’s taken root during the ­pandemic.

BC's paid Sick Leave Will Support Workers, Reimburse Businesses
Workers will soon have access to a made-in-B.C. paid sick leave program that will support workers to stay home when they are sick during the pandemic and afterward, including permanent paid sick leave, as a result of legislation tabled Tuesday, May 11, 2021.

The thing about networking is, the best way to make it feel genuine — so the other person doesn’t feel like you’re desperate or imposing on them or just reaching out because you need something — is to actually reach out without needing something.
