Claudia Torres, from Oakland, went through our program in 2013 and now refers her own students to the program!
Here is Claudia’s story:
“I was a junior in high school when I heard about the Summer Legal Fellowship Program. I am so glad I joined the program! It taught me a lot about the justice system and gave me the opportunity to intern at the Oakland Mayor's Office. It was an amazing opportunity, and I also made really amazing friendships.
The program allowed me to picture myself in college and wonder where I would go, and if it would give me a similar feeling as it did when I was there. It really boosted my confidence in applying and going for what I'm interested in.
After the program, I stayed connected through the Facebook group and through email. The Facebook group is amazing; I love how it keeps alumni connected for questions or opportunities that arise.
Although I did not pursue the criminal justice field, the summer program motivated me to volunteer with the Prison Education Project where I work with youth who are in correctional facilities and support them once they are released.
I recently got my Masters Degree in Education from California State University and I am currently a teacher in Oakland. Aside from teaching an English Language Development class, I support emerging multilinguals in their academic classes. I love the opportunity I get to support students as well as to connect with families.
I am always happy to discuss my experience as a first-generation college graduate from Oakland, and to be a resource to anyone, especially to other summer program alumni!”
