Weekly Update

Scripture of the Week

I JOHN 5:3-5 NKJV

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Profiles in Wisdom

Where are the Victorious Christians? ~ Chris Bassett

As a young believer, I struggled.  I had a difficult time breaking old habits, creating new ones while choosing to deny my own flesh-driven desires for the sake of God's will and His kingdom.  I believe this is common for all new believers since maturity is always the result of a process.

As a young believer, I watched to see who was living out of victory who was trying to figure it out like I was.  I would watch and occasionally find some people who loved Jesus and were hungry for more of Him.  They were willing to do whatever it took to serve, to love, and to pour out into the lives of others.

Unfortunately, at the time I didn't want to be like any of the elders in the church as they were quite grumpy and complained a lot.  I didn't want to be like the young adult leader who was always trying to impress people with his understanding and knowledge (not to mention his guitar skills).

As I look back, I think everyone was struggling with the same things I was. They might know more and have practiced walking out their disappointment better, but they were struggling in their Christian lives.  Their battles were real, but the victory wasn't.  The biggest problem was the show.  Making it look great, all while clearly providing evidence to the contrary.  Let it not be so among us.

What are you modeling for the new believers, the immature believers, and those on the outside looking in?  Can you openly expose your brokenness and deep need for dependency on God?  Are you able to still believe in the Son of God who empowers you to overcome the world when you can't see Him?

Maturity takes time and process, but hunger, honesty, and transparency don't.  Perhaps the salt is actually our honest assessment and declaration of our deep need for a loving, healing, and empowering God!  These are the victorious ones, those who can believe in His power to transform us even when it seems distant.  The victorious ones aren't perfect, but they freely love and serve God, giving it all to Him, without remorse or regret.

I encourage you to take your next step in maturing and get real with someone about your brokenness, disappointments, and pains so that you might find a new route to love, obedience, overcoming, and ultimately a greater more mature faith.

Rise up in the victory which is in Christ!  The Good News is for you!
