See you at the Volunteer Expo on Sunday!

From firefighters to dog walkers, ushers to historians, lifesavers to environmentalists and everything in between – the Mackay Volunteer Expo will have a role to suit everyone.

Mackay Showgrounds’ Big Shed will play host to the expo – returning after a hiatus in 2020 – this Sunday, May 16, from 10am to 2pm.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the exciting expo had outgrown the Senior Citizens Hall.

“We regularly have more than 50 organisations in attendance with more than 1000 perspective volunteers coming along,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Add to that a smattering of emergency services vehicles and interactive displays and we needed a suitable big venue,” he said.

“The Volunteer Expo is a sensational opportunity for not-for-profit organisations to showcase the amazing work they do for our community.

“Likewise, it’s a great opportunity for residents from all walks of life to discover what a volunteer role can bring to their lives.

“If you’re new to the workforce, a volunteer role is amazing for upskilling and building a resume, and if you’re new to town or feeling isolated, volunteering is a tremendous way to meet likeminded people.

“Of course, if you are transitioning into retirement, volunteering is a great way to stay active, social and pass on your skills.”

Nicole Pasquale became a volunteer with the Mackay State Emergency Service (SES) after attending the 2017 Volunteer Expo.

“I went along, had a look around and discovered the SES,” Ms Pasquale said.

“I’m now a flood boat operator and I go along to the community education events and help out at those, which I really enjoy,” she said.

“I’d recommend getting in and giving volunteering a go to anyone – it’s a great way to give back to your community.”

Lulu Piperone is a volunteer with Headspace Mackay’s Youth Reference Group and is a perfect example of someone who has enjoyed the upskilling benefits of volunteering.

“It’s really brought me out of my shell,” Miss Piperone said. “We do a lot of team building and community engagement.

“I’ve been able to find myself, form so many friendships and at the end of the day I know I’m really making a difference.”
