CAP Newsletter Spring 2021

Launch of our annual report

Our annual CAP celebration was a very different occasion this year, as we welcomed speakers and award winners to a hugely successful online event on March 31 when we also launched our 2020 annual report.

Speakers included our chair Derek Lewis, who praised the resilience and determination of local communities to tackle alcohol harm among young people and improve their health and wellbeing during this difficult time. He also outlined CAP’s plans for an intensive programme of growth in Scotland.

Baroness Helen Newlove gave the keynote speech, in which she highlighted the importance of educating young people on how alcohol harm can impact on health, wellbeing and prospects, while Nikki Davies, Health and Wellbeing in Schools Co-ordinator at West Berkshire Council, described how CAP’s Young Health Champions course was ensuring that young people are equipped to make the right decisions about issues including alcohol, drugs, anti-social and criminal behaviour.

CAP Director Kate Winstanley outlined CAP's impact over the last four years:

New CAPs launch
The Millom CAP launched on March 8 and will work with youth services and local organisations to provide alcohol-free activities for young people, with local schools to take a proactive approach to alcohol education and with local retailers to help them avoid making underage sales and reduce ‘proxy’ sales where adults buy alcohol for under-18s. Read more here.

Our newest CAP was launched in York on April 12 to highlight the risks of underage drinking and improve the health and wellbeing of local young people. Its partners include North Yorkshire Police, City of York Council, Licensing, Youth Justice, Youth Commission, schools, alcohol retailers and community organisations. Read more here.
