Authority Meeting Highlights
May 14, 2021
Last evening, the Authority reconvened virtually once again, beginning the meeting with the adoption of a resolution on finding the need to conduct the business meeting by electronic communication means during Governor Northam's declared State of Emergency during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Authority business meeting began with a presentation from David F. Snyder, Vice Chair of the Authority, and Chair, Transportation Technology Committee; Keith Jasper, Principal, Transportation Planning & Programming, NVTA; and Mackenzie Love, Regional Transportation Planner, NVTA, who unveiled the NVTA Transportation Technology Strategic Plan's (TTSP) Eight Strategies and an Action Plan, proactively preparing how to use evolving technologies to address travel demand on infrastructure, with congestion reduction top of mind.
Recognizing no one can plan for continuously evolving technologies and infrastructure challenges alone, the Eight Strategies were identified and defined with the guidance of the NVTA Executive Director’s Transportation Technology Committee (TTC), comprised of local, regional and national thought-leaders representing a broad range of perspectives relevant to the development, implementation, operation, and impact of transportation technologies.
After presentation completion, Authority discussion and feedback, and NVTA staff recommendation, the Authority unanimously adopted the inaugural NVTA Transportation Technology Strategic Plan’s (TTSP) Action Plan and Eight Strategies within, that focus on mobility, accessibility, and resilience, while embracing the core values of safety, equity and sustainability.
Since transportation technologies will continue to provide new opportunities and challenges related to the Authority’s vision for the Northern Virginia transportation system, the TTSP must evolve to remain current. Consequently, NVTA staff will provide regular updates on the TTSP, and needed changes. Additionally, over the next several months, the public will have the opportunity to weigh in on transportation technologies as part of the update to TransAction, Northern Virginia's long-range transportation plan.
