July 2021

President Message

Greetings from WAHA!  June is over and July is here.  Congratulations to all of those who have competed at the Region 10 Championship shows!  Please send photos and any story you would like featured to Karissa Held at diamondh.arabians@gmail.com.  We love sharing stories from our members.

We had our first trail ride held at Camp Anokijig on their horses this spring!  For the first time in a very long time a group of members were able to join each other safely and enjoy riding through the rolling Kettle Moraine Forest at Camp Anokijig.  Thank you to everyone who came out and thank you to Camp Anokijig for hosting the event.

August 6-8th is our annual WAHA August Show at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds!  All-breed classes, western dressage, dressage, performance, fun classes and more!  Volunteers are still needed for the show.  If you are interested please reach out to Heather Hall at heatherhall@tds.net to be added to the volunteer list.  Show sponsorships are also needed, please see the form in the show book.  The premium book for this show is available at https://wisconsinarabian.com/shows

Save the date for our annual Fall Colors Open Show at the Walworth County Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 9th!  This show is also in need of volunteers.  Please contact Jamie Wright at WAHA.youthcoordinator@gmail.com if you are able to help.  Show sponsorships are also always appreciated.

Have a great rest of your summer and we look forward to seeing many of you at our future events!

Sincerely,

Jessica Dillingham
WAHA President

WAHA Presents a New Scholarship Opportunity
This scholarship is open to all WAHA members including affiliate members, amateurs, youth, and professionals

This is an annual scholarship awarded each year at the annual meeting for funds up to $200 to a member of the Wisconsin Arabian Horse Association in order to further their education with an Arabian horse or within the Arabian breed.

Scholarship requirements
  • Individual must be a member in good standing with the Wisconsin Arabian Horse Association for at least one year prior to scholarship application
  • Member must submit a written application detailing how the scholarship would be used to open additional educational opportunities such as riding with a different instructor, attending a clinic, attending judging school, or USEF education. The application should reflect the individual’s involvement with the Arabian horse and how it will benefit their education while riding, driving, or handling an Arabian horse or how it will give back to the Arabian horse community.
  • The member must have volunteered a minimum of four hours at WAHA events the previous calendar year prior to scholarship application.
  • The member must demonstrate involvement with an Arabian or half-Arabian horse. Ownership of the horse is not necessary.
  • The member must write up a brief synopsis and be willing to share their experiences in the newsletter within 60 days following the event.
  • Funds may not be used for show or travel related expenses. Scholarship money is given upon the scholarship committee receiving receipts.
  • A member may not receive the scholarship consecutive years.

The form must be received by October 31st for consideration.

WAHA Youth Updates
From WAHA Youth Coordinator, Jamie Wright
Great news! For 2021, the WAHA Youth Achievement Award Program is FREE!

We want to leave 2020 in the dust and celebrate the return of horse shows and activities in the coming year, and what better way than to award prizes for participation in those events? Whether your primary focus is the show ring or other activities, there are opportunities for everyone to earn points (and swag at the end of the year!). As you will see, you can earn points for volunteering for a therapeutic riding program, participating in clinics or 4H activities, hippology contests, volunteering at a horse show (either for the show itself or grooming for someone else), and more! Please complete the forms online (www.wisconsinarabian.com/youth, scroll to the bottom of the page) and submit to WAHA.youthcoordinator@gmail.com. Because show season has already begun and this information is getting to you late, points will be honored outside of the normal window for events that are already in the past if you can get the completed and signed forms to me before July 15th.

WAHA Youth In-Person Meeting:

There will be an in-person meeting for the WAHA youth Friday, August 6th at the WAHA August Show!  The meeting will take place near the show office, after the last class of the evening (Class 70).  Please plan to attend!

WAHA Legion of Merit
The Legion of Merit is open to all WAHA membership categories and purebred Arabian, Half-Arabian, and Anglo-Arabians may be nominated for this program. While showing, riding endurance, or trail riding, points are accumulated over the career of the horse. The WAHA Legion of Merit is a separate cumulative WAHA Legion of Merit and is rewarded with a beautiful bronze trophy that is a design unique to WAHA. It is $50 for the first year or $40 for each following year to nominate a horse into this program. If choosing the WAHA Points program flat rate program, the LOM program is included.

WAHA Legion of Supreme Merit
The Supreme Legion of Merit is open to Purebreds, Half-Arabians and Anglo Arabians. Horses that have earned the WAHA Legion of Merit may continue in the WAHA Point System. Starting in 2004, horses earning 1,000 additional points in the WAHA system will receive an award for WAHA Supreme Legion of Merit Award. Nomination fee will be $50 the first year and $40 for each year thereafter. All rules are the same for the WAHA Supreme Legion of Merit as the WAHA Legion of Merit Award.

Prize Selections

WAHA August Show: August 6-8th, 2021
The WAHA August Show will take place August 6-8th this year, and you won't want to miss this show! As usual, a large selection of classes will be offered including halter, performance, dressage, western dressage, sport horse, and ranch riding.  New for 2021, western dressage suitability classes are also offered.  Performance, halter, and western dressage classes will be judged by Dr. Karlan Downing.  The traditional dressage and sport horse classes will be judged by Carol Bishop, who is a 2021 Sport Horse Nationals judge.  An ice cream social is planned for Friday evening.  The full prize list is available on the WAHA website at https://wisconsinarabian.com/shows.

We are in need of volunteers for this show, as it takes a lot of teamwork to keep multiple arenas running!  With rising facility costs, every volunteer and/or sponsorship helps us continue to put on shows.  If you are able to volunteer during the show, even for a few hours, please contact Heather Hall at
heatherhall@tds.net to see where you can help.
WAHA Spring Trail Ride at Camp Anokijig
On May 16th, WAHA members and friends were able to participate on a trail ride hosted at Camp Anokijig using the camp's horses.  The weather was spectacular with very few bugs, and riders were able to relax and enjoy the scenic views of the Kettle Moraine Forest with friends.  A huge thank you to Camp Anokijig for hosting this event, and to WAHA president Jessica Dillingham for being our guide on the trail!
