Schools Are Getting HOW Much Money?

This week, the Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) took up education funding.

As you may be aware, under the various federal spending laws that passed, Congress gave Wisconsin schools $2.6 BILLION. For comparison, the last 3 years, the total increase in school funding was only $1.8 billion. Unfortunately, the federal money is tied to poverty levels, so while some districts got a lot of money per student (Milwaukee Public Schools got $11,000/student), others got comparatively little money.

On Thursday, the JFC took action to make sure every school district which held 50% in-person classes sees $781 per pupil. To help offset future potential education budget shortfalls, JFC also set aside $350 million for the future. Other highlights include:
  • Almost 10% increase in special education funding
  • Doubling mental health funding for schools
  • A 54% increase in school-based mental health collaboration grants
Next week, the Joint Finance Committee will be taking up Workforce Development, DNR, Agriculture and more!

Honor Our Fallen Soldiers this Memorial Day

On Monday, May 31st, we celebrate Memorial Day.

Since 1866, Americans have set aside a day in late May to honor our nation’s fallen soldiers. Our current Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and began three years after the Civil War. The day was established for all Americans to decorate the graves of those who fell in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars.

For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date originally selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

The National Moment of Remembrance was also established by Congress as an act of national unity.  It is observed at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 31st for one minute.
