From the Rector
The Rev. Dr. Jared C. Cramer, SCP

Dear <<First Name>>

It is my delight to tell you that, given the changes in federal and state guidelines, and the changes in diocesan guidelines, under advice of the Coronavirus Response Team and the Vestry, effective immediately I am moving our congregation to Phase 3 of our Plan for Safe & Faithful Ministry in the Pandemic

So, that means a lot of things are changing as we begin to open up...

At Sunday Worship, there are several adjustments:

  • We will lower our distancing to 6ft in between households, which means we now have fifteen pews available for attendees. Today Jerry Hall is redoing the roping to increase our seating capacity (thanks Jerry!).
  • We are reopening the "Soft Space" for kids at the front and the back of the church. The risk of COVID transmission is now clearly through respiration and not touching surfaces (see here and here). Of course, kids are in no way required to use the soft spaces, and they can always bring their own toys, but we hope that this will make families start to feel more welcome back at church.
  • We will resume use of home-made communion bread by our amazing Communion Bread Bakers! (Love baking and want to join this ministry? Contact me for more information!) We will also resume carrying forward the bread and wine with the alms and offerings, just as the prayer book requires on page 361.
  • Following the service, we will begin hosting an outdoors coffee hour (weather-permitting). Our sexton will setup a table, coffee cups, and glasses in the St. Francis Garden and our amazing and hospitable Coffee Hour Hosts will make coffee and lemonade to put outside. We cannot do food yet, but I'm hopeful the diocese will also lift that restriction soon. (If you can follow instructions to make coffee and lemonade and have a hospitable spirit, contact me for more information on joining this rotation—we do still need a host for this Sunday!) I'm going to setup an iPad outdoors as well so we can still talk with those doing coffee hour on Zoom!
  • Masks will still be required indoors, per diocesan guidelines, so that we can keep the vulnerable safe—especially our children who cannot yet be vaccinated. But when we are outdoors (like at coffee hour) masks are optional.

And remember, this Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, so wear red and join us in person at either to our service of Holy Eucharist and Harpsichord at 8:30am (sign up here) or our Bilingual service of Holy Eucharist with incense at 10am (sign up here). The 10am service will continue to be streamed live on YouTube for those who cannot attend in person.

We are also now ceasing the offering of Monday evening Eucharist at 5:30pm and have returned to our normal practice of one weekday offering of Holy Eucharist and Healing on Wednesdays at Noon.

Our building is also now open for normal hours (generally 8:30am-5:30pm, unless a group has scheduled the space for later or earlier), with the Parish Office now open from 10am-2pm. I've asked Cindi to ask our Parish Office volunteers if they would like to start helping out again. If you've got the time to help out for an hour (or more) within those 10am-2pm hours, let Cindi know

This means that ministries and groups can begin reserving space in the building again for meetings by contacting Cindi. When reserving space, remember that even if everyone is vaccinated, masks are still required indoors. (If you reserve space outdoors, masks are not required). Also, be sure you reserve a room that will enable distancing. And, remember, at this time food is still not permitted—but you can absolutely have coffee, so long as you keep your masks on when not drinking it!

I'm also starting to do more pastoral visits and am looking to restart regular ministry with our Eucharistic Visitors and Stephen Ministers. So, if you'd like to see me (or a Eucharistic Visitor to bring you Communion or a Stephen Minister to walk alongside of you in a tough time in your life), please contact me

And be sure to save the date for our 155th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, June 6. The 10am liturgy will be a historic liturgy from the prayer book in use when we were founded and we are planning on doing a festive reception of some sort outside, depending on restrictions at the time. We're even going to have Bob & Katy Couch's classic rock band perform!!

I look forward to seeing more of you soon. Please reach out if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

Warmly,

April Vestry Minutes

The Minutes from the March Vestry Meeting have been approved and are available online here. Parishioners are always welcome to attend Vestry meetings (virtually, for now). The next meeting of the Vestry will be on the Zoom platform Monday, May 17, at 6:15pm. If you would like to participate as a guest please contact Fr. Jared so he can send you the Zoom link. Archives of past meeting minutes are always available online here.

Subscribe to SJE Podcasts

Did you know there are not one, but TWO podcasts our parish runs, both of which are updated weekly?
The first one is the podcast feed for our sermons. You can subscribe to it on Apple Podcasts (or using whatever other podcast app you prefer) and you will always have access to the audio of the latest sermons from St. John's.
The second is Christian Mythbusters, a weekly 5-minute radio and podcast segment that Father Jared writes where he tries to unpack, debunk, and reconsider some of the ways we often think about Christianity and the church. You can also subscribe to that on Apple Podcasts, or your preferred podcast app.
Both are great ways to remain connected to SJE no matter where you are!

May Parish Page

The May 2021 Parish Page is now available online here. The deadline for submissions for the June Parish Page is Monday, May 17. Submissions should be sent to Cindi and may be edited for content and/or length.

Do the "Murph" for Memorial Day with Father Jared!

St. John's is excited to be a Gold Sponsor of the "Murph" challenge in support of those who serve in the armed forces and in honor of those who gave their lives and who we recognize on Memorial Day. The event is on Memorial Day (Monday, May 31, 2021), hosted by 321 Wellness & Fitness Center, with times throughout the day to do the "Murph." A little more about that...
The “Murph” workout is in honor of Lt. Michael Murphy who passed away in 2008, during operation Red Wings. CrossFit gyms across the nation participate/workout in his honor. This particular workout was created from Lt. Michael Murphy’s favorite movements. After a month of training in May, everyone will get to see what time they can finish "The Murph" in!
During the month of May, if you are a veteran or active duty military you can register online for FREE to participate in one of the heats on Memorial Day, May 31, 2021 (use code "MurphVET"). Even more, you will be able to train FOR FREE the entire month of May at 321 Wellness in preparation! Just contact 321 Wellness and they'll be able to give you more information.
If you're not a veteran but want to train during May so that you can complete the "Murph" on Memorial Day in support of those who gave their lives and who we remember on Memorial Day, you can join too! Since we are a gold sponsor, the first two people who email Father Jared will get their event fee on Memorial Day waived! Everyone else can pay the registration fee when you register (there's even an early bird discount until May 7 if you use code "“EarlyMurph21”).  Then email 321 Wellness for pricing on one month of training at the gym. Father Jared will even be thrilled to meet you at your first workout to workout with you as an encouragement! All workouts at 321 Wellness have an outside and distanced option to fully comply with CDC guidelines.
All proceeds from this event will go directly to assist an Active Duty Military person participating in the event and what is left over will go to the Brain Treatment Foundation Charity!
Father Jared will be training at his normal times of 6:15am on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (once he's back in town from vacation) and will be doing the "Murph" at 321 Wellness on Memorial Day bright and early at 7:30am. He'd would love to have you join him, whether at those times or on your own schedule.

Global Dining Fundraiser - Pop Up Style

As we continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian Americans continue to be targeted in acts of violent assault, traumatic verbal harassment, and often-overlooked discrimination that aims to devalue their dignity and their place in society. To combat these harmful actions, we want to build a chorus of solidarity and ensure the Asian American community receives the support it needs to fight anti-Asian hate and racism. Stand with the AAPI (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders) community and rectify the racial inequalities in our society. Support the AAPI Community Fund to uplift and protect Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.  Festival Fixx invites you to donate to our cause: Stop the Hate. In collaboration with St. John’s Episcopal Church Grand Haven, we are hosting a Global Dining Pop-Up Fundraiser to support this cause.  Please click here for more details, to order from our menu, and to donate.

The draft of the 155th Annual Parish Meeting minutes has been posted . If you have any notes of correction, please If you cast a vote in the Vestry election, please e so your name can be added to that list, which will then be finalized, signed, and included in the minutes.   The minutes will be formally approved by the 156th Annual Parish Meeting, tentatively scheduled for 11:30am on Sunday, January 30.

In this way we acknowledge our country’s history of racism and are called to pray for a better future. At SJE, following the bell ringing, we will gather in the Nave to say the Great Litany of prayer and repentance. More information about this massacre can be found online here.

CORPUS CHRISTI: Our annual observance of Corpus Christi will be on Thursday, June 3, with a service of Evensong & Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 6pm that evening. You are most welcome to join us as we adore Christ in the sacrament and give thanks for the presence of Jesus during the struggles of this past year.

FOUNDERS' DAY: Join us on Sunday, June 6, 2021, as we celebrate the 155th anniversary of our parish founding with a special liturgy at 10:00am! Our worship that day will be structured to resemble what worship was like in the Episcopal Church when our parish was founded. Then, after the liturgy—weather and COVID restrictions permitting!—we are hoping to have a special reception outside to celebrate our parish's history and future!
