As the summer months unfold in all their techicolour glory, we reflect on a period of significant disruption and anxiety to pupils.

With this in mind, this month's newsletter looks at assesment and using the best available evidence to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Diagnostic assessment in primary literacy

Diagnostic assessment in maths

"Whatever format our assessment takes, we should avoid the temptation to rush our pupils through a battery of assessments. The return to school may see some gaps closing very quickly, while other deeper misconceptions may take longer to emerge," writes Simon Cox, secondary maths teacher and EEF specialist.

NEW – SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANNING RESOURCES PAGE
The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has launched a new webpage designed to support schools in shaping their priorities and planning changes for the year ahead.

It signposts high-quality, evidence-informed resources to support decision making around key areas such as utilising diagnostic assessment, maximising learning and curriculum adaptation.

OPPORTUNITIES
Supporting early language and communication development
The Department for Education has confirmed funding will be available to the Nuffield Foundation to deliver the Nuffield Early Language Intervention (NELI) for reception children in the academic year 2021/22.

Evidence-informed teaching and learning - Developing Learners Memory (Session 3/3)
We are proud to be supporting Bristol City Council, Bristol Primary Teaching School Alliance and the EEF in delivering the 3rd and final of 3 free online workshops for new teachers across the city. With guest speaker Freya Morrissey, ELE for Kingsbridge Research School and Head of English at Teign School.

The Developing Learners Memory event will be taking place on 25th May 2021 – 4.00pm – 5.00pm.

Developing Effective Leadership of Teaching Assistants (DELTA)
DELTA is a ground-breaking project aimed at meeting the needs of children in Bristol who are most at risk of underachieving, both historically and in light of the impact of COVID-19 on learning.

Bristol City Council have partnered with the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and West Somerset Research School to work alongside Bristol schools in Developing the Effective Leadership of Teaching Assistants.

Metacognition and Self-Regulated Learning

Seven recommendations for teaching self-regulated learning & metacognition


Led by Tom Colquhoun, Director of West Somerset Research School and Will Smith, Metacognition ELE on behalf of the North Somerset Teaching Alliance (NSTA). 

The EEF published their guidance report in April 2018, outlining 7 recommendations that schools can follow. You will be taken through the recommendations and then have the opportunity to reflect upon your own practice and plan for change in your school.

NEWS
SomersetWorks Summer Holiday Programme 2021
Great news for Somerset County Council who have received £150,000 funding from the Sunday Times Christmas Appeal in partnership with the EEF and working together with the West Somerset Research School, to support their SomersetWorks Summer Holiday Programme 2021.

The principle aim of this ambitious project is to support disadvantaged Year 11 pupils in the school holidays; keeping schools open and providing pupils with a safe place to go, a good meal and engaging activities.
