From the Pastor...

I subscribe to a daily email devotion from Fr. Richard Rohr’s Center for Action and Contemplation. Each day’s meditation ends with the prayer below:

Loving God,
you fill all things with a fullness and hope that we can never comprehend.
Thank you for leading us into a time where more of reality is being revealed for us all to see. We pray that you will take away our natural temptation for cynicism, denial, fear and despair Help us have the courage to awaken to greater truth, greater humility and greater care for one another. May we place our hope in what matters and what lasts, trusting in your eternal presence and love. Listen to our hearts’ longings for the healing of our suffering world . . . (add your prayers for loved ones and those in need).
Knowing, good God, you are hearing us better than we are speaking, we offer these prayers in all the holy names of God.
Amen.

Peace,
Pr. Richard

First Reading: Acts 1:15-17, 21-26

Psalm 1
Second Reading: 1 John 5:9-13

God has borne witness to the gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ. Whoever believes in the Son of God believes in the witness of God and has the promise of eternal life.

Pre-Assembly Gathering
For Voting Members, Guests, and Assembly Visitors
Sunday, May 16 from 1:00 - 2:30 pm

On Sunday, May 16, beginning at 1:00 pm, we will gather for a multi-faceted time of conversations about the Southwest California Synod, the ELCA, and the upcoming Synod Assembly , which will be held on June 4 - 5, 2021 Our Presiding Bishop, The Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, will join us.

Topics will include the election of a new synodical Bishop, Vice President, and other officers and committee members. Those in attendance will receive overview reports regarding the State of the SWCA Synod, our current financial situation, upcoming resolutions and memorials being brought to the Synod Assembly, and how our Voting Members will be gathering for the first time in a virtual Synod Assembly. We invite all members of all congregations of the SWCA to participate , with a special invitation to all of the Voting Members and guests who will be attending the Synod Assembly in June.

VOTING MEMBERS OF THE 2021 SYNOD ASSEMBLY are invited to submit questions to the Assembly Committee Chairs and to Bishop Eaton concerning assembly procedures, elections, reports, and the role of a synodical Bishop. We will do our best to answer all questions, either at the gathering or in later communications.
Submit your questions here!

Assembly materials, including reports, nominees, resolutions, and financial information, are available at the Voting Members Resource Page on the synod website.

With the clarity and depth characteristic of the classics, this spiritual bestseller lays out a perceptive and insightful plan for living a spiritual life and achieving the ultimate goal of that life — union with God. Nouwen views our spiritual “ascent” as evolving in three movements.

Books are available at Thriftbooks.com, and at Amazon.com to name just a couple.

Please contact Marshall Pihl before May 11 if you are interested in being part of the committee to call our next pastor. Here’s the process for forming the committee:
  •  The executive committee will review all names at their May 11 meeting and develop a prospective list that represents who we are and where we need go.
  • Council will review the list at their May 20 meeting and develop a list for recommendation to the congregation.
  • The congregation will review the proposed list and elect the final call committee at the June 13 congregational meeting.
Don’t delay, contact Marshall today!
Mt. Carmel Annual Meeting
June 13, 2021
It’s time once again for the Mt. Carmel Annual Business Meeting. We have a date, but the time and method (online or in-person) has not been determined. Please watch the Vistas for more information as the church council considers the available options.
Community vaccine clinics in Paso Robles and Arroyo Grande now offer COVID-19 vaccines to those who walk-in. No prior appointment needed! Help us spread the word that it's never been easier to #GettheVax for free through County Public Health. Read the news release and share the post on social media.
Mass Vaccine Clinics Closing June 4

The County of San Luis Obispo plans to demobilize three mass vaccination clinics in Arroyo Grande, Paso Robles, and San Luis Obispo on June 4, 2021. The community clinics have administered over 151,687 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine since December 2020.

Health care providers and pharmacies across SLO County and smaller Public Health clinics will continue to offer the vaccine. Visit
MyTurn.ca.gov to make an appointment or  read our recent news release.
Join the movement and help spread the word!

We need your help in spreading the facts and benefits about COVID-19 vaccines. Let's get our community one step closer to immunity.

Here are 5 easy things you can do right now to help us share the facts:
  1. Sign up for the Vaccine Champions newsletter.
  2. Share one of our ready-to-go social media posts about the vaccine.
  3. Get the facts on our Frequently Asked Questions page.
  4. Add a #VaccineChampion photo frame to your Facebook profile picture.
  5. Post a photo of yourself smiling, flexing your vaccine arm, or showing off your "I got vaccinated!" sticker, and tell us about your vaccine experience-- don't forget to hashtag #VaccineChampion!
Read the full news release here, and sign up to be a Vaccine Champion by visiting www.RecoverSLO.org/VaccineChampion
Protect Your COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card
Your vaccination record card has personal information that can put you at risk for identity theft. Make sure you protect your card and identity with these tips:

✔️ Do: Snap a picture of the card in case it gets lost or misplaced.
❌ Don't: Share a photo of your card online. Take a picture of your vaccine sticker or bandage instead.
✔️ Do: Keep your card stored in a safe place at home.
❌ Don't: Laminate your card. The heat may damage the card or cause the ink to be illegible.

Anyone who loses their vaccination record card should not print a fake one at home or buy a fake vaccination record card, as it is
against the law. Instead, request a new one by calling the County’s Phone Assistance Center at (805) 543-2444. Read the full news release here.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Thank you to everyone who donated food to our monthly Iglesia Santa Cruz food drive. We delivered a full load again this month, just in time to restock the pantry.

Matching Gifts Challenge Benefitting the SLO County Food Bank

The new donation site is up and running. Please click the link below for more information.

Link to Mt. Carmel matching funds page

If you prefer to donate to the matching funds challenge by check, make your check out to the SLO County Food Bank. Write Mt. Carmel Matching Funds Drive on the memo line so that your donation will be properly credited.  Mail to:

Food Bank Coalition of SLO County
1180 Kendall Road
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

Please do not route your food bank donations through Mount Carmel.  Doing so will delay your donation and make tracking the matching funds challenge donations difficult for the food bank.

Thank you to Mount Carmel for your always generous spirit!
