Helio friends,
I am writing to you following a remarkable and engaging week that I hope you had the opportunity to attend. I am thrilled to share that the Heliophysics 2050 Workshop was an unequivocal success, and I want to thank you for the active role the community played by participating both during the workshop as well as beforehand, pulling together pre-meetings, discussions, and white papers. The community came together in ways that far exceeded my (already high) expectations. It is clear that the workshop was such a success because of the detailed prework so a huge thank you to everyone who contributed. Great job!
I would also like to recognize the outstanding work done by the Science Organizing Committee, chaired by Sabrina Savage and Shasha Zhou, with Jared Leisner and the HPD team together with our friends from the Lunar and Planetary Institute who all went above and beyond. Thank you all!
We had over 1,150 registrants with approximately 425 to 650 engaged each day. We were fortunate to have many new voices joining the discussions and strong international participation. The program also covered discipline-specific science, fundamental physics, interdisciplinary and inter-Agency sessions. This expansion of the community will continue to bring new perspectives and diversity, which will continue to make us stronger. I want to call special attention to one of the closing sessions, “Heliophysics as a Community in 2050,” in which you all considered how to strengthen inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) within the community as well as developing and sustaining healthy, multi-generational approaches for teaming. I’ll take this opportunity now to recommit ensuring that Heliophysics makes lasting and enduring change in this space and look forward to your continued engagement.
This workshop was built to enable cross- and interdisciplinary connections, and it did just that. The Expanding the Frontiers session brought together the different heliophysics disciplines, planetary science, and astrophysics to discuss how and where the scope of heliophysics can grow. Additionally, the fundamental physics discussions addressed processes that operate everywhere from the solar surface out to the edge of the heliopause. Finally, the Space Weather session reflected the desire for a pipeline from basic research to operational needs, including a Research-to-Operations-to-Research loop. Beyond these planned connections, I was thrilled to see community members take the opportunity to attend other disciplines’ sessions and discuss their similarities and intersections. The interactions facilitated by the workshop will be invaluable. What an incredible event!
There are many benefits we will take away from the workshop, but one in particular I’d like to note is the momentum we have going into the 2024 Decadal Survey. As you know, NASA uses the decadal survey to prioritize science, both for mission and non-mission activities. Our hope for the next decadal survey is to identify cutting-edge, interdisciplinary science problems that push the boundaries of what was previously thought possible in solar and space physics. Collaborating with the community at the Heliophysics 2050 Workshop was a crucial step toward realizing our innovative goals for the next decadal survey.
One final theme I want to share is one that I heard throughout the workshop—unity. A unified Heliophysics Community is crucial as we move forward into the future. This theme was present in the science sessions as well as the community discussions. It was inspiring to hear so many diverse voices joining in the shared goal of defining the future of Heliophysics.
Thank you all again for your participation and support. This was a remarkable effort and I am very proud of this community.
The sessions were recorded and are available for registered attendees to view on the workshop’s website for the next few weeks. I encourage people to go back and watch the sessions that they missed.
It’s a great time to be a Heliophysicist.
