Fruits and Nuts, Wyoming and AD, Albers and Olmsted, open the gates,
we are starting to toss off the shrugs of winter, and hold hands with the colors and waters and history of spring. Let the garden beds be dug and lined, the chairs pulled out to the sun, get the pillows and bedding some air, sweep and clean and even nod, these are new plays.
Illustrated Catalog of American Fruits & Nuts
US Department of Agriculture Pomological Watercolor Collection, 1886-1942, 378 pp., Atelier Editions 2021, cloth $50.

A grandma once told me, when she was 16 years old, you were expected to know 16 different kinds of apples, by their smell and looks and taste, and that was how you knew when and what to use in an apple pie.

This is a lovely book, a catalog of such knowledge, and such times, a sweet presentation of paying attention and loving attention, a playlist of fruits and nuts.

Inspired by Place : CLB Architects
foreword Ian Volner, introduction Tom Kundig, 444 pp., cloth, $75.

A tribute to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Montana, to rocks and stones and trees, to big and to gentle. CLB Architects was founded in 1992, in what was an almost shy ski town, mountain village. Jackson Hole has become the very front edge of rural modernism, the literal icon of residential architecture and design in the mountains, of the mountains.

CLB is right there, a fine and wonderful crew, bent to the task of keeping honor and power and sheer intelligence pointed right at the design of their mountain houses. In a way, their harshest critics are the trees and the land, the mountains and the streams, the wind and snow and the animals. And all of history. And they know it.

Ten very powerful wood and stone houses, presented in the fullest color and in the fullest natural context.

AD at 100: A Century of Style,  Architectural Digest
editor Amy Astley, 462 pp., cloth 2020, Abrams , cloth, $100.

So funny, you can not not look at this, it is a runway of rare looks inside private worlds, the best interiors of the past 100 years. From Lautner and Capote to Wearstler and Vervoordt. Divided, with certainly some tongue, into California, Celebrities, Designers' Own Homes, City, Artists, Country, Fashion Insiders and Cost.

That should get you there, and of course, it does. You barely have time for a drink or barely can do it without a drink. What fun and fortune.

Immersion : Living and Learning in an Olmsted Garden
Nola Anderson, photos Clemens,296pp. cloth, 2021 printed in Italy, $75.

In 1991, a couple purchased a historic twenty-eight acre seaside estate, north of Boston, in Manchester by the Sea. The centerpiece of the property were the gardens, designed in 1903-1914 by Frederick Law Olmsted. The buildings were a wreck, the gardens were left to their own, and the couple had never gardened in their life.

This is a big, sprawling, sweet tale of the land making a reclamation of its new owners, a tale of design and history and seduction, a tribute to the literal power of the landscape.

Anni and Josef Albers
composed by Lake Verea, 2021, Hatje Cantz, 191pp., paper, 6"x6", Berlin, $26.

An intimate portrait, built from the ephemera and archives in the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, of the two beloved artists. It is a kind of sculpture of their lives, from sketches and notebooks, matches and letters, dress shirts and work pads, snippets of fabric, type written memos and letters - it is the things that are the things that signal and finally, the things that collect and echo. Until you have a sense.
