An exhibition invitation for you...

The National Centre for Australian Children's Literature Inc. invites you to enjoy
the Dog Tales Exhibition. Opened in Canberra on 10 May, the exhibition will run until 23 June. Some 35 works by much loved creators, Bob Graham, Ann James, Alison Lester and Andrew McLean are on display.

Four students from the University of Canberra spent four months on this project which was part of their degree requirements. From the NCACL art collection, the students chose which creators and which works about dogs would be in the exhibition. Next they created detailed labels for each artwork chosen, dividing the 35 works into three themes.  The students then produced a display of the creative process involved in the development of the works, sourcing and putting together profiles of the creators on film and choosing posters.

Volunteer, Max Brown framed a dozen artworks, normally kept in safe storage, just for this exhibition. While NCACL volunteers assisted with the mounting of the exhibition, the students were guided by Alex Stalker-Booth, the University's Art Collection Manager. The students gained valuable knowledge about children's books and how to put together an exhibition.

The NCACL Board and volunteers look forward to seeing the community coming to view these wonderful works. The Mura Gadi Gallery at the Library, Building 8, University of Canberra is open from Monday to Friday from 10.30am to 4.30pm. If you are not in, or coming to Canberra, enjoy these two articles and look at the television coverage.

Donations from generous families

The National Centre is grateful to Rosemary and Stephen Mattingley for the very generous donation of original artwork for 3 of Christobel Mattingley's award winning books. Included in the donation was "The Miracle Tree", The miracle tree / by Christobel Mattingley ; illustrated by Marianne Yamaguchi, "The Angel with a Mouth-Organ" The angel with a mouth organ / Christobel Mattingley ; illustrated by Astra Lacis and "Lexl and the Lion Party", Lexl and the lion party / by Christobel Mattingley ; illustrated by Astra Lacis.

Stephen and Rosemary wanted these pieces of art to join other artwork of the National Centre’s holdings highlighting the collaboration between Christobel and the artists who collaborated on her texts. ChristobelMattingleyDonation.pdf (ncacl.org.au)

Volunteers were delighted to hear from Louise Yeoman's, Jean Chapman's daughter about a very exciting find she had during the lock down period.  More of Jean's papers including the speech she made in 1990 when she received the Lady Cutler Award were located. The papers together with the framed Lady Cutler award are now proudly part of the NCACL collection. Click here to view Jean Chapman's NCACL catalogue holdings.

The National Centre was thrilled to recently receive another wonderful donation from Elizabeth Honey's collection of artworks. Artwork which had been adorning her home walls and other items which complement two collections of Elizabeth's papers and manuscripts will be described and uploaded to her files. Coincidentally the National Centre also holds the artwork Elizabeth created for Christobel Mattingley's Asmir in Vienna and No Gun for Asmir

When permission is given by creators there will be an online exhibition of these artworks in the Exhibition and Gallery section of the website. Meanwhile, the Board and volunteers wanted to express their gratitude for these significant donations.

Many thanks to Angela Brown for locating some 500 sought after books for the Collection.  So far, some $1292 has been expended on purchasing these treasures.  Angela uses a combination of searches on the NCACL catalogue and the wish lists in this task.

Celebrating the NCACL's latest, freely available resource ...

The National Centre has just reached 482 books in its free database of children's books by and about Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander Peoples.  To visit the resource click here.

To explore the retrieval capacity of the resource use the Subject search in the Advanced Filters Options. A choice of 'families' retrieves some 45 books by culturally diverse writers and illustrators. Books for 0 - 4, primary and secondary grades are annotated and include the Australian Curriculum and Early Years Learning Framework plus authoritative, free online teaching resources.

A group of 25 annotators from all parts of Australia brought their various professional backgrounds, voices, expertise and passion to this project. For 18 months now, they have read, reread, thought, written and rewritten their annotations and given their perspectives.

Below is a visual sample of these books about diverse families that are written by and about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. Using the audience option reveals 80 titles have been recognised as useful for ages 0 - 2; 181 for 3 - 4 ages; 357 for ages 5 - 8.  Use the audience search feature for titles assigned to other age groups.

The National Centre's Board would like to thank the anonymous donor who enabled an additional 200 titles to be added to the database.
