Sandycroft Memories from David Ens, Class of 1976

“Things sure have changed over the years. There is much at the current campus that has remained the same, but there are so many upgrades. Every now and again we find ourselves in Penang for one thing or another and I like to drop by and see what's new.
When I first saw it (the campus), I recall everyone knew it as Sandycroft, and there was quite a strong Aussie presence in Tanjung Bungah. When we travelled from Phnom Penh to Penang, we had to stop in Thailand and join the "Thai Kids". Once we flew a "milk run" and made about five stops between Bangkok and Georgetown before taking the ferry and a bus to school. Still it was so much better than that long bus ride up to the Cameron Highlands!"

Back to School: Q&A with Alumni Serving at Dalat
|
|
|
Did you know that several alumni serve at Dalat as staff? In this feature section, we’ll update you on these Penang-based alumni and what they’ve been up to.
Jon Horton, Class of 1987
What are you currently doing?
My wife, Lori, and I are wrapping up our time after 11 years here at Dalat, transitioning back to the United States near my parents in Salem, Oregon. I will be looking to get back into Software Development by starting my own company, SchoolAlly, focused on software for schools. If that doesn’t do so well, I will be looking for other programming jobs in the area. We are looking forward to being closer to family and our daughters there.
What is a great memory from your time at Dalat?
I have a lot of great memories growing up at Dalat. Staff talent shows with Mr. Kirkham’s magic and teachers doing silly skits (How the stomach churns...). Friday night activities, AYF, JSB’s and our Senior Sneak at Langkawi. In the end though, the most important memories are the relationships made. Whether with roommates in the dorm, classmates, other students through the years, or going on vacation with other staff families. Those are the memories I cherish the most.

Marlene (Bouw) Reichert, Class of 1975, (living in western New York state) shares her news with classmates and friends:
“I have retired from teaching high school in the NYC school system and have remarried. My husband Ron (also a retired NYC teacher!) and I now have time to garden and write in a variety of genres, including music. For those Dalat alumni who know my parents, although my mother has gone to glory, my father is 95 and still sharp as a tack, God bless him!”
