Notes from the Editor
Aloha friends of SOKO. It was so nice to see so many of you, IN PERSON(!) at our Pop Up Art Show and Sale at SKEA on May 8. Some highlights are shown below. It was a very fun event, with art, music and good friends together on a beautiful day. We hope to do it again, you’ll find out when in a later edition of this Newsletter.
Now that summer is coming, we are starting to gear up for our next year. New member applications are due June 15, and we may be announcing new members later in the month. Most of the members from last year will be returning, so we know we will continue to be an interesting and eclectic group of creative people. We don’t have any in-person events scheduled for June as a group, but as always you can contact individual artists through their own websites, or at https://sokoartists.com

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications for membership in SOKO for the 2021-2022 year are due June 15. If you, or anyone you know, is an artist interested in joining us, we encourage you to apply. Membership application forms can be found on the SOKO website.
STUDIO TOUR 2022. SOKO’s Annual Studio Tour and Sale will take place February 26-27, 2022. Preparations are in full swing already, and are greatly looking forward to welcoming all of you back into our studios and homes. WILLA MARTEN
Traditional Craftsmanship and Novel Creativity
Willa is a metalsmith working in pewter, as well as a creator of “found object” art utilizing objects found on her beachcombing adventures and “gifts” from the trees in her own front yard.

LYNN PEAVY Artistry In Clay; Beauty In Many Forms
Born and raised in Southern California, I discovered my interest in ceramics when I registered for an introductory class at a local community college in 2005. I became the never-ending student, finding fulfillment in artistic creativity, and I have never looked back. Of particular interest to me is the ceramic art of Raku, the process of firing uniquely shaped, textured and glazed vessels in a low temperature kiln, reducing them in a can or wrapped in damp towels and in some cases fuming them. I find the process exhilarating, and a whole lot of fun.
My unique combination of shapes, textures and glazes have generated interest in my pottery. When on the Mainland I did well when I competed in the Orange County Fair, taking first place in 3 of the 4 years that I competed, winning my division twice, and once taking Best of Show. My work has been displayed and for sale at the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) in Pomona, CA.
I have taken many workshops in the art of Alternative Firing and have found that the more I learn, the more that there is still to learn. It is a never ending, very rewarding process. Working in clay, for me, is a true joy…

Dianne McMillen is doing an overhaul of her workspace, organizing materials, sorting glass and glass scraps, trying to make more room to begin again. She’s gearing up for summer craft fairs, because it looks like a new normal is emerging, and she will be ready.

Mark Martel has a new gig as informal artist-in-residence at the Heavenly Hawaiian Coffee Farm. Visitors on the farm tour may catch Mark painting the endless choice of views most Mondays, and they can browse through his cards, prints and originals in the gift shop. Heavenly boasts that it runs the most popular coffee farm tour in the world! Now if he can only get a painting done before it rains.

Kathleen T. Carr will be in two juried art exhibits in June: the "MidSummer Art Celebration" at the Wailoa Center in Hilo, from June 4-30, with an Open House on June 4, 1-6pm. Mondays - Fridays from 8:30am - 4:30pm, 200 Piopio St., Hilo. For more info: www.wailoacenter.com/upcoming-happenings.
The second is "Exploring the Big Island” at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea. Our Mission
SOKO (South Kona Artists Collective) brings together artists in South Kona to reach a wider audience through exhibits, events and our annual Studio Tour.
