LaVAWN - La Trobe Violence Against Women Research Network
Welcome to another edition of the LAVAWN news.

We hope everyone in lockdown is holding up ok. It is really tough to be in lockdown again, and our thoughts are with the many people experiencing family violence.

This month we have a picture of Kirsty's cat Smudge kicking back by the fire, keeping warm and relaxing. Hopefully, you are all able to channel some of Smudge's energy over the long weekend.

For our LAVAWN catch up this month, we are excited to say we have Dr Renee Fiolet from Deakin, whose talk is titled 'Working with First Nations people in co-designing a family violence resource'. You can find further information below.

We thought we might share some positive news, as things can feel quite grim right now. Domestic violence prevention received $1.1 billion in the federal budget. The Victorian state budget has also announced $354 million to support victim-survivors. We hope this will be useful in addressing the root causes of family violence and further support those in immediate need.

Also, more Orange Door services are opening up across the state. Orange Door is now operating in 8 of the 17 Department of Health and Human Services areas in Victoria and aims for statewide coverage by 2022.

On a different note, ANROWS is inviting researchers to register their projects with the Register of Active Research (RAR), a centralised register of current research helping to build a comprehensive landscape of research in progress in Australia relating to violence against women and their children. You can register your research project with ANROWS here.

At LAVAWN last month, Associate Professor Sallie Yea presented 'Re-thinking "sex trafficking": Critical issues concerning gendered migration in Asia'. You can watch the recording here

As always, we have a list of resources at the end of this email. If you feel emotional distress, please reach out to the EAP (accessed through the intranet).

Regards,
Kirsty Forsdike, LAVAWN Chair

Working with First Nations peoples in co-designing a family violence resource

Dr Renee Fiolet from Deakin University
17th June 12.30-1.30 via zoom

Dr Renee Fiolet is a lecturer of Nursing at Deakin University and a Safer Families CRE Scholar who recently completed her PhD at the University of Melbourne. She will talk to us about her study, which involved drawing on community-based participatory research methods with a First Nations community to explore the barriers Indigenous peoples face when seeking help for family violence. A co-design approach was then used to develop an online family violence resource with the community that promotes healing through connection to culture, community and country.
