IEDP Issue  91                                                                                     May 2021

A word from the Chair

Hello everyone,

So here we are at the end of May and you could be forgiven for wondering what exactly has changed in the past month and on the face of it not that much: COVID-19 is still around and making its presence felt with variants now named after the countries that they seem to originate from, creating more bias against people from those countries. On the other hand, lockdown has eased a lot and many are acting as if there was no virus in the first place, then we have the COVID denying marchers, campaigning for no masks to be worn, chastising those that do wear them.

May 25th  also marked one year since the murder of George Floyd, with many voicing their opinions and feelings globally. That day sparked a movement around the world as watched in horror the nine minutes and 29 seconds of George Floyd’s death at the hands of a police officer.

In many ways this was a tipping point – people around the world actually saw for themselves and understood the extent of police brutality: not only that, they focused on what racism means in today’s world and we witnessed outpourings of support in the form of marches, media focus and of course the ubiquitous black squares of support on social media.

Many in the business world pledged to change ….and some did. But in many instances it seems as though we’re back to business as usual, with self-interest being the order of the day.
Ultimately it’s up to each of us as individuals to be aware, use our voice and be the change ourselves every day.
