3 readings I like No. 17

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

I just signed a contract for a book together with two fantastic co-editors! This is going to be an exciting, longer-term project and more news will follow soon!

Book review of “The Good American”

“Kaplan’s superb prose and Gersony’s attention to detailed records form a unique symbioses that really helps for many places to come alive without losing sight of the people behind the stories, the State Department, USAID and foreign policy community (…). Gersony remains in the background, a role he always preferred, and Kaplan provides the rich tapestry of people, places and projects that make this an excellent book to engage with the history of development through a biographical lens.”

Karen McVeigh for the Guardian; child sponsorship remains a complicated issue between fundraising tool, decolonial challenges & the real positive impact it can have on individuals and communities.

Lebanon Economic Monitor, Spring 2021: Lebanon Sinking (to the Top 3)
The Lebanon financial and economic crisis is likely to rank in the top 10, possibly top three, most severe crises episodes globally since the mid-nineteenth century. (…) This illustrates the magnitude of the economic depression that the country is enduring, with sadly no clear turning point on the horizon, given the disastrous deliberate policy inaction.
This new World Bank report may not have a catchy title, but chilling insights into scale of the crisis in Lebanon, a state falling apart as we watch…

Keep in touch & check out these three very different publications, from a 680-page book on Canada’s voluntary sector to a short report on tobacco taxation & the documentation of a a classic speech by the iconic Dag Hammarskjöld (you get expelled from Sweden if you are not a fan ;)!
