But one of the brightest stars of the show is Beverley itself, with its exquisite medieval churches, real market, independent shops and superb pubs. Surrounded by the Westwood, one of the great urban commons of England, this hidden gem of a town celebrates its 1,300th birthday this year. (Its 'founding father', St John of Beverley, died in AD 721.)
