Emerging evidence on impact of COVID on outcomes
The findings of an NMPA study into maternal and perinatal outcomes of pregnant women with COVID at the time of birth has been published. It finds evidence to suggest that COVID infection at the time of birth is associated with higher rates of stillbirth, preterm birth and emergency caesarean delivery. The 3,500 women who tested positive for COVID-19 around the time of birth covered by the study were twice as likely to have a stillbirth, and the rate of premature birth was also twice as high when the mother had COVID-19 at the time of birth.
Whilst there is still much to learn about the impact of COVID on outcomes, this gives an important reminder of the need to keep women, babies and their families safe – in particular the importance of vaccination for pregnant women and the use of testing to ensure that we continue to prevent onwards transmission of Covid-19. Rural LMS Network - 9th June 10:30-12:00
A Virtual meeting of the Rural LMS Network is taking place on 9th June 10.30-12.00. The Network is intended to allow those LMSs who primarily cover rural communities to address the particular issues that they face and share learning.

Equity: Births and infant mortality by ethnicity
The ONS has published
trend data from 2007 to 2019 for England and Wales. The data show:
- The stillbirth rate and infant mortality rate for each of the ethnic groups have fluctuated but generally decreased from 2007 to 2019 following the national trends.
- Babies from the Black ethnic group have the highest rates of stillbirths and infant deaths, with babies from the Asian ethnic group consistently the second highest.
- A higher proportion of live births within the Asian, Black and Any Other ethnic groups were in the most deprived areas compared with the White ethnic group.
- For most ethnic groups, immaturity-related conditions are the main cause of infant mortality, however, for Bangladeshi and Pakistani ethnic groups the main cause is congenital anomalies.
National Maternity Dashboard - February 2021 maternity data published
The maternity services dashboard brings together maternity information from a range of different sources to support the aims of the Maternity Transformation Programme. The dashboard presents data at Trust level and helps clinical teams in maternity services to compare performance with their peers on a series of Clinical Quality Improvement Metrics (CQIMs) and National Maternity Indicators (NMIs), to help identify areas that may require local clinical quality improvement.

Care continuity between midwifery and health visiting services: principles for practice
A PHE document has been published to act as a tool to support local practice implementation and improvements in the care continuity between midwifery and health visiting services.
This guide provides evidence and good practice examples about improving care continuity between midwifery and health visiting services. It is relevant to providers of midwifery and health visiting services (including clinical staff and managers) and service commissioners working within integrated care systems and local authorities.
Personalised Care in Maternity Services eLearning
A free eLearning course on personalised maternity care delivered by the Personalised Care Institute is available and open to all. Developed with obstetricians, midwives and services users, the course is live and can be accessed by registering and

The course discusses how
healthcare professionals can support women to make safe and informed decisions during their antenatal care and delivery. Using a
case-based approach, it discusses consultation skills and methods which healthcare professionals can use as well as the
IDECIDE tool, due to be launched later in 2021.
The course also covers the Montgomery court case, which fundamentally changed the test for consent in the UK.

Digital Maternity Programme - Request for Information (RFI)
NHSX are initiating a Digital Child Health and Maternity Programme to develop a baseline understanding of the market place. This will help NHS providers procure Digital Maternity Services to support NHS England and Improvement ambitions. NHS England / Improvement and NHSX are committed to working with maternity system suppliers to identify what digital technology-based solutions can be offered for women, their families and partners, and the health and social care professionals supporting them during pregnancy.
This information will be made available to Maternity Providers to help procure a maternity system with a desired level of functionality appropriate for local and national ambitions.
A request for information (RFI) will be issued by close of play 11 June 2021, with responses requested by 9 July 2021.
Estimated date for publication of contract notice is 29th October.

NHS 10 Steps: Developing engagement plans - with a maternity focus

This course presents the well-established 10 Steps model that sets out what must be considered when developing engagement plans and building partnerships with people and communities. For this session we are targeting people working in Local Maternity Services – while the content will be the same as other 10 Steps sessions, having a targeted audience means discussions can focus on this area of work.
Working with people and communities is one of the most important ways we can ensure that the NHS meets the needs of patients and the public. By engaging with people in meaningful discussion of the collective challenges we face, and of how to overcome these, we can tap into the diverse experiences, insights and ideas that patients and the public bring. (This engagement includes, for example, working with Maternity Voices Partnerships.)

PMH LTP Commissioner webinar - Friday 18 June
