Hello Advising Network,

My heart goes out to our Indigenous community members with the devastating reminder of the inhumane treatment towards Indigenous peoples, and why we need to do more, learn more and stand strong beside our colleagues and students. I also acknowledge that learning about this painful lived history may be difficult, especially if you are new to Canada or Ryerson, but it is important.

See below for learning opportunities, Registrar updates and an opportunity to receive funding to support hiring a TRSM student.

Understanding Egerton Ryerson's History

Knowing the history of Aboriginal relations in Canada, the history of education before and after European settlement, and, in particular Egerton Ryerson's role in Aboriginal education, is integral in supporting our students and colleagues. There are many resources available to assist you in learning more, including the perspective of Professor Anne Spice in the May 11, 2021 Globe and Mail, available through the Library

Northwestern explains, "It is important to understand the longstanding history that has brought you to reside on the land, and to seek to understand your place within that history... colonialism is a current ongoing process, and we need to build our mindfulness of our present participation.”

Indigenous Elder Joanne Dallaire's message and President Mohamed Lachemi's message about the Kamloops residential school and burial site provides more information and supports.

And while the current session of Time for Reflection and Dialogue with Elder Joanne Dallaire is full, watch the Learning Events calendar Wellbeing section for more opportunities.

Amy Desjarlais, the FNTI (First Nations Technical Institute) Co-ordinator in the School of Social Work, has put together some resources & actions Non-Indigenous folks can take in solidarity with Indigenous folks & Residential school survivors and their families.
