Important News from ECHO
The NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR)
Announces The Early Career Reviewer (ECR) Program

Each year, the NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR) recruits 1100 early career investigators (ECIs) to the “Early Career Reviewer (ECR) program”.  The selected ECIs will participate fully in the NIH grants review panels, also known as the Study Sections.

ECHO ISPCTN Principal Investigators (PIs) are encouraged to share with eligible ECIs to self-nominate into this program. There is no need for the PI’s to nominate a candidate for the ECR program. PI’s only need to inform young researchers about the program and ECIs should submit their own application. Participation in the NIH Study Section meetings helps ECIs to learn about grant writing, what makes a proposal good and what makes it not so good, and how grants are evaluated and scored. These are important steps in capacity building.

Application Criteria:
The application process is simply a check to see that you meet the posted requirements.
  • > 1 year of experience in an independent position
  • Open to assistant professors and those of a similar rank
  • Have submitted a grant application to the NIH and received the summary statement
  • One research publication as first, last or corresponding author since your PhD/MD; and at least one research publication as the first, last or corresponding author over the last two years
  • Have not held R01 or equivalent NIH funding and have not served as an NIH reviewer

If you have any questions about the ECR Program in general or the application process, email Dr. Kristin Kramer.

NIH Office of Extramural Research:
Help Your Grantees Understand When to Acknowledge NIH Support

In May, the NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER) discussed in an Open Mike blog on Why Properly Acknowledging NIH Support in Your Paper is Important, and FAQs are also posted on the public NIH Grants & Funding Communicating and Acknowledging Federal Funding webpage.

The blog covers acknowledging NIH support on published papers, press releases, and other activities that describe NIH funded projects is a term and condition of NIH grant awards. It also outlined the issues caused, when investigators improperly cite awards not directly connected to the publication (over-citing) or fail to properly acknowledge NIH-funding on publications (under-citing). Reviewers, Congress, and the public might get an inaccurate picture about the progress resulting from NIH investment in biomedical research.

Thank you for helping the NIH reinforce this message with your grantees.

Write Winning Grant Proposals
Register now!

Save the date to attend this very valuable workshop sponsored by the Kentucky Pediatric IDeA Grant Research Center (K-PIRC) on Thursday, October 28 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern.

Grant proposal-writing skills are essential for the promotion and success of academic investigators. Obtaining grants requires perseverance and essential skills in communicating your ideas to the funding agency. Regardless of whether applications for funding are for basic science or patient-oriented investigations, there is a need to convey your ideas effectively. This seminar comprehensively addresses both conceptual and practical aspects that are associated with the proposal-writing process. Rather than offer what is typically presented (little more than how to fill out forms and conform to instructions) this proposal-writing seminar emphasizes grantsmanship: idea development, how to write for reviewers, and tips and strategies for creating logical and convincing arguments in each section of the proposal.

Each participant receives a copy of The Grant Application Writer’s Workbook. The workbook provides participants with an opportunity to apply what they have learned through an interactive, step-by-step approach. The principles and fundamentals emphasized throughout the program will appeal most to individuals interested in writing grant applications to the NIH, NSF, and USDA, but are also easy to modify for grant applications written to other funding agencies.
