Your lab could win a cool $5,000 by taking the top prize in the UC Davis Lab Safety Awards, in addition to accolades, and the knowledge that you're leaders in contributing to a strong safety culture at UC Davis.

Extra credit could make all the difference in whether your lab is selected. Please email your answer to the question below, before July 1, to Becky Grunewald at bgrunewald@ucdavis.edu.

Extra credit question: What safety practices did you institute during the pandemic that you plan to continue in your lab? The COVID-19 pandemic forced changes to the way we work, including how we think about safety. In two paragraphs or less, tell us about pandemic-related safety practices that will live on in your lab.

Week of June 7 - Wildfire Preparedness

Week of June 14 - Return to In-Person Lab Safety Reviews

In June 2021, in-person lab safety reviews will commence using the full LSR checklist. Join the Lab Safety Review Program for a presentation that will get you ready for in-person lab safety reviews and refresh your memory on lab safety resources, common lab hazards, and chemical waste management best practices. Week of June 21 - DSC Academy w/ Ergo & Job Hazard Training

Department Safety Coordinators (DSC) are critical to safety in departments across UC Davis. The DSC Academy incorporates a selection of soft and technical skills courses, which DSCs can complete to earn a certificate. Learn more and RSVP
Week of June 28 - Timely Injury Reporting

Our goal is to see serious injuries and fatalities reported immediately - at any hour. All other injury reporting would happen within a business day. Risk Management is hosting a timely injury reporting overview covering processes, timelines and resources. Learn more and RSVP

Research Ramp-Up Resources

The Office of Research recently published guidelines for ramping up on-campus research to Phase 4, with a potential start date of June 15. A summary of the implementation and guidelines for Phase 4 are available on the Office of Research website. Currently, campus is in Phase 3: guidelines for Phase 3, as well as additional COVID-19 Research Resources, are available on the Office of Research website.

If your lab is returning to on-site research, Safety Services has a Lab and Research Ramp-Up Checklist available which outlines steps to take prior to resuming lab work, including assessing the integrity of chemical containers and disposing of chemical waste that may be past their pick-up date. Be Smart About Safety Funds
The goal of the Be Smart About Safety (BSAS) Program is to increase safety awareness and reduce or prevent injury or illness by providing a funding mechanism for loss prevention and control programs, equipment, and training efforts.
 
Apply for BSAS Funds in June
Email proposals to Risk Management, including a description, the amount of funding requested, and any additional information that supports the request. There is no limit on the number of requests or ideas, and Risk Management welcomes all submissions.

New Lessons Learned
Unexpected Chlorine Gas Generation and Microtome Injury
Be sure to read the product insert for proprietary kits: they often include reactive materials that could result in an unexpected outcome when handled incorrectly.


The UC Davis Lessons Learned webpage describes incidents that have happened at UC Davis - as well as other UC campuses - and highlights what went right, what could have been done differently, and how to prevent similar incidents in the future.

New Faces at EH&S
EH&S recently welcomed Lina Planutyte as the new Associate Radiation Safety Officer and Audrey Sulkanen as the new Hazardous Materials Specialist for Fire Prevention Services.
 
Lina began her career in radiation safety as an assistant to the Radiation Safety Officer at CSU Fullerton and then went on to earn a Master's Degree in Biotechnology at Cal Poly. Before joining EH&S, Lina worked at the UCD Center for Molecular and Genomic Imaging as a radiochemist. She looks forward to the increased opportunity for collaboration with the campus at large in her new position.
Audrey recently started as Hazardous Material Specialist for Fire Prevention Services. She is in the process of finishing her PhD program under Dr Gang-yu Liu in the Department of Chemistry at UC Davis. Her research focused on 3D Nano printing and the creation of structures out of different systems including mechanically sensitive mechanophore. Before coming to UC Davis, she completed her undergrad in Chemistry at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

In her new role, Audrey hopes she can help with repeated violations such as chemical compatibility. She wants to make sure lab personnel are not afraid to ask questions and wants to be approachable. Read more about Audrey on the Safety Services website.
