June 2021 Newsletter
June is National Indigenous History Month

When community members enter a museum, they look to staff as the trusted authorities on the collections we care for.

The Collingwood Museum cares for a collection of Indigenous cultural objects that we know very little about. Items within this collection are the most asked-about in the exhibit gallery and often have the least documentation as they were among the first donations to the Collingwood Museum’s predecessor, the Huron Institute, between 1904 and 1964.

Documentation of these early collections was very different than the standards used today. Objects from across the county and around the world found their way into the collection accompanied by very little information.

In honour of National Indigenous Month, we will be featuring items from the Museum’s Indigenous Collection on our Facebook page. Our hope is by sharing our lack of knowledge we will learn more about the cultures, communities, families, and experiences they represent. Through open dialogue and collaboration, we are committed to ensuring respectful and appropriate cultural heritage management and repatriation.

Summer Activity Kits

Take home the fun of our children's programs this summer! We're offering new activity kit themes every other week in July and August. Designed for children ages 6-12, these heritage-inspired kits include craft materials, activity suggestions, and a surprise from the Museum gift shop.

Kits are available by a suggested donation of $10. Quantities are limited and kits are on a first-come-first-serve basis. Starting June 28, orders can be placed for curbside pick-up by calling 705-445-4811 Ext. 7211.

We'll miss our regular children's programs this summer, but we cannot wait to see what participants create with these activity kits!
