Dear <<First Name>>,

June 5 marked World Environment Day. Weeks earlier, the climate justice movement had a historic win when the Hague District Court ordered Shell Oil Company to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Also last month, the U.S. government joined with India and South Africa in support of a patent waiver for COVID-19 vaccines -- a significant shift in support of global vaccine justice.

At HRFN, we recognize the interconnection between the health of our bodies and the health of our planet. We are heartened by these small but important steps to put people first and to prioritize solidarity over corporate power.

And so we ask: How can human rights philanthropy further collaborate across sectors to ensure that major wins continue? How and where are movements gaining momentum? How can funding reach the intersections of economic, racial, climate, health, and gender justice?

This June, join us as we look at practices and possibilities for transformative approaches to human rights funding.

Measuring Human Rights:
Tools for Informed Philanthropy

Join us for a discussion with the Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI) to learn about their global platform to track the ups, downs, and overall trends in how countries around the world are – or aren’t – meeting their human rights commitments. During this 60-minute conversation, we’ll unpack what information HRMI captures and why it matters, explore how funders can use the findings to further human rights goals, and imagine a world where countries are invested in improving all people’s lives.
The webinar will include a sneak peek at HRMI’s 2021 dataset, which will be launched later in the month.

This event is hosted in collaboration by HRMI and Ariadne – European Funders for Social Change and Human Rights.

Alternative approaches to addressing violence against human rights defenders

Of the 331 human rights defenders killed last year, 69% worked on land, Indigenous peoples’, environmental rights. At the same time, environmental defenders are crafting new alternatives and leveraging legal strategies to protect their land and their lives.

On 22 June, the
Zero Tolerance Initiative will showcase lessons from Peru where rights holders have responded to the gaps in the Human Rights Council’s resolution on environmental defenders and built alternative approaches to community protection. We will also hear from the Strategic Legal Response Centre (SLRC), whose complementary legal strategies are providing flexible, proactive legal support and rapid legal responses to Indigenous and local communities under threat. The SLRC offers rapid legal support to forest communities around the world, drawing together a strong international and local community of practice.

This event is hosted in collaboration by Human Rights Funders Network (HRFN), Freedom House, Forest Peoples Programme and Zero Tolerance Initiative.
