Happy Pride Month!

Bristol's official party isn't until July, but the celebrating starts now! Pride Month is held in June to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, an incident in 1969 that saw the LGBT community fight back when the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York, was violently raided by the police. Whilst it wasn’t the first action in the LGBT rights movement, the event fortified the feeling that the community wouldn’t be ashamed, but rather would stand together, proud of their identities and free to love who they wanted. The first Christopher Street Liberation day, marking the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots, was held in 1970 - the modern Pride movement evolved from this to become the international month long celebration that it is today.

Visibly show your pride or allyship with something from our LGBTQ+ Solidarity collection... but will it be this one-of-a-kind Pride Platter, one of the colourful solidarity mugs pictured below, or an inspiring screen print encouraging you to "go forth and sin some more"?!

Things To Do

Donate to the Bristol Topplers’ Defence Fund

The four protesters facing charges over the toppling of Colston are due to appear at Bristol Crown Court in December 2021, for a jury trial lasting up to eight days, which means hefty additional legal costs, as well as lost income and other expenses. The Glad Colston's Gone coalition have launched a fundraiser in the hope that the rest of the ten thousand people who brought the Colston statue down, and supporters around the world, will ensure these costs are covered.

Move On Over: From Countering Colston to Black Lives Matter

There are still a few events left to happen in this series celebrating the success of local campaigns challenging the glorification of the slave trader Edward Colston by Bristol’s elite institutions which culminated in the historic action of the Black Lives Matter movement last June. Find out more about these events, which include a book launch and Severing the sinews of slavery in Bristol, an in-person history walk around the city centre.

The Colston statue: What next?

From Friday 4 June the controversial statue itself will be on display at M Shed, alongside a selection of placards from the protest and timeline of key events leading up to 7 June 2020. Read more & book tickets »

Fighting against the police bill?

Mon 7 June, 7:30pm. Zoom Link (Meeting ID: 795 9086 1753 / Passcode: 4iEMS4)

If you want to stop your GP data leaving your GP practice for purposes other than your direct care, you can find instructions for opting out here - but you need to do so by June 23!

Happy Volunteers Week Bristol!

Taking place 1-7 June every year, Volunteers Week is a chance to recognise the fantastic contribution volunteers make to our communities and say thank you - as Marvin does in 'A Time To Say Thanks', a short film about Bristol voluntary projects.

Bristol City Council invites you to recognise and thank your own local volunteering stars by nominating individuals or groups for Bristol's Wall of Thanks - or thanking them directly with special postcards, available to download & print, or you can pick one up at selected community venues across the city.

Every day the PRSC relies on the hard work and support of our dedicated volunteers who get involved with everything from selling china to managing our events to packing up issues of Dope Magazine for rough sleepers. We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has given up their time to help us out in the last few years. You guys rock!

As the summer starts to get busy and the venue kicks back into full swing, there will be plenty more volunteering opportunities coming up. If you want to get involved then let us know!

Apply for funding for ideas for your library
