HAVING A BABY: ENVIRONMENTAL VANDALISM?

After reading the shocking title of a recent Vogue article, one might be forgiven for wondering if there are too many people living on the face of the earth who are using up the world’s resources at an alarming rate. In this disturbing article, Is Having a Baby in 2021 Pure Environmental Vandalism?, author Nell Frizzell theorized that the question of depleted resources is more realistically one of consumption rather than population. Either way, my response is the same and is best summarized by blogger Emily Mangiaracina. She countered, “There is nothing more cynical, more anti-‘progressive,’ more self-denigrating, more dense, more senseless, more anti-human, more tragic.” [1]

Ms. Mangiaracina tells the story of a nine-year-old girl she read about who threw out all her dolls. Her mother asked, "Why are you doing that?" The little girl responded, "Because there are too many people on the face of the earth. I'm never going to be a mother." [2]

This real-life example illustrates that society has reached an ominous point when mothers limit the number of children they have or stay childless because of concerns about their children’s effects on the planet.

Harking back to last week’s ALERT, this powerful example also illustrates the importance of prayer during these crazy times in which we live. Only God can reverse seemingly irreversible dire situations. “For we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
