From Our CEO

Thank you to everyone who participated in National Volunteer Week celebrations from 17-23 May 2021. We had very pleasing attendance at the volunteer thank you events in Alice Springs and Darwin. Please see our Facebook image galleryAlso pleasing was the ‘Colour Your Community Red’ online campaign with Facebook engagement reaching 7,155 in the Northern Territory. Well done everybody and let us all continue to thank and celebrate volunteers every day of the year.

Today is Mabo Day, a day commemorated by Australians on the anniversary of the historic Mabo decision, which paved the way for formal recognition of native title claims in Australia. It is also the end of National Reconciliation Week, with this year marking 20 years of Reconciliation Australia, and almost three decades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process. We reflect that volunteering may be perceived differently by First Nations people and Indigenous Australians, and we need to breakdown these barriers and be responsive to community needs.

Nominations for the The Australian of the Year Awards are now open. The Awards honour great Australians from all walks of life, so please have a think about someone you know who goes above and beyond in contributing to the greater community and nominate them in this year’s Awards.

Advocacy & Policy

Volunteering integral to achieving Federal Budget priorities

The Federal Budget has allocated significant and welcome new funding to aged care provision, mental health services and building community resilience, with each of these relying on the contribution of volunteers. In taking forward these reform agendas, the role of volunteers needs to be explicitly recognised with dedicated investment ensuring volunteering is safe and sustainable into the future.
