Background: Glycine (2-aminoacetic acid) is one of the most important amino acids and a neurotransmitter. The body produces glycine, synthesized from other natural biochemicals as serine, choline and threonine. Glycine can be also consumed through high-protein food like meat, fish, eggs, dairy and legumes. Glycine has a wide range of benefits: it enhances memory, is instrumental in regulating blood sugar levels to the point that it could replace the need for insulin with diabetics. It helps to increase the absorption of nutrients and is involved in digestion, specifically in the breakdown of fatty acids in foods. It helps increase the sleep time when taken 1 hour before bed. It helps with motor functions and helpful for those with Parkinson’s and other disease conditions. Glycine can be also used to heal wounds (due to its ability to regulate the body’s immune response and to limit unhealthful inflammation) and treat skin ulcers.
