A Passion for Sustainable Fashion
w/ Sophia Carolina
Make Good founder and sustainable fashion stylist

Sophia’s passion has long been affordable, sustainable, wildly stylistic fashion.

Her earliest days as a child were spent with her father combing through racks of clothing at thrift stores (“segundas” en español) and styling custom clothes for her dolls. Back then, money was tight and shopping second-hand was a necessity. Over time, finding beautiful needles-in-the-haystack among countless clothing discards became a refined skill for Sophia.

As a biology major in college, Sophia learned of the beauty of nature as well as in clothing. Experience in business and a career in marketing at Coca-Cola eventually led to entrepreneurial endeavors, including the creation of her own children’s clothing line, and eventually, a successful brick-and-mortar store in San Diego, Make Good, opened in 2010.

Make Good followed a unique hyper-local, environmentally sustainable business model. With a qualification ranking of 98% as a Certified B Corporation, Make Good focused on locally-crafted artisan goods and resale clothing, returning over 90% of its revenue back into the local community (typical locally owned business return up to 60%). 100% of the goods sold at Make Good were locally sourced. As a border community, this meant both San Diego and Tijuana, making Make Good the leading provider of artisan goods from Tijuana in the San Diego region.

Make Good was also a leading provider of resale designer clothing in San Diego, offering high-end, like-new clothing at affordable prices. This created opportunities for the less-affluent or eco-minded clientele to dress exceptionally well while making a small dent in the high environmental and human cost of fast-fashion and textile manufacturing.

Today, Sophia transitioned Make Good to focus solely on resale clothing via an online business model.  Make Good has grown its inventory and following, while reducing the environmental impact of clothing manufacturing by rescuing and giving new life to great clothing, at affordable prices.

You can find Sophia @makegood on Instagram and with us this Friday in person in the Garden patio at 5:30 pm.  She will bring some her favorite pieces to share with us.

Thirsty Yet?
New releases on the move.

Clementine Carter Grenache Rosé 2020
250 cases produced $36

My mom used to gather wild raspberries growing in the brambles of our neighborhood’s creek sides during her morning summer walks in Michigan.  She’d carry them cradled gently in her t-shirt knowing I’d be waiting on the front porch excited for the drop into my pudgy hands, coloring them bright red as I hurried to relish these tiny, tart gifts.  With humidity humming in our ears and sunshine haloing my mom’s figure, we licked our palms of the pure salty sweet sensation dissolving on our tongues.  Tierra Alta and Kaerskov vineyards.

Clementine Carter Grenache Blanc 2020
200 cases produced $36

We are in the middle of a massive field of sunflowers at high noon in the Macedonian countryside and everything is ascendant.  Hypnotized by the gilded vibration, a slight breeze puffs past and all petals gently flutter in unison.  It’s all lost in translation and feels absolute for one fleeting moment softly enraptured in the wind.  Kimsey, Martian and Lacerte vineyards.

Clementine Carter Larner Grenache 2019
75 cases produced $45

The wines from Larner vineyard transport me to running the Ray Miller trail in the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking the Pacific Ocean at sunset. A salty ocean breeze gently winds its way through a lavish herbal bouquet filled with California Rockrose, coastal sage and wild thyme. Calming, cool and mindful of its impressive presence.

Clementine Carter Graciano 2019 Two Wolves
125 cases produced $48

Think Chanel No. 5, fishnets, and a white feather boa like Aretha used to flaunt onstage.  This high-toned, high-touch velvet wonder vaunting its electric purple hue almost didn’t come to be in our sunshine state. Two-hundred acres of Graciano is now thankfully planted in a classic case of mistaken identity. The mystery of the unintentional imposter for Mourvèdre was solved in 2018.

Casa Dumetz Chardonnay 2020 LaBarge
35 cases produced $48

When the worlds of goodness collide you get delicious Chardonnay.  LaBarge Vineyard organically farmed, own-rooted Mount Eden clone from Brewer-Clifton’s 3D vineyard grown in pure sand off Sweeney Canyon road in the Sta. Rita Hills.  The once and future queen.
