Volunteering
In National Volunteer Week, communities within the Shire of Gingin celebrated the significant contribution made by their volunteers. Never has this been more deserved where we have dealt with drought, devastating bushfires, floods and then a global pandemic. This 'Thank You' Dinner and dance was held to acknowledge volunteers for the positive difference they make to our communities.

**To the volunteers who were present and to the volunteers unable to attend due to other commitments, the distance to travel and reduced numbers as a result of Covid Restrictions THANK YOU for the roles you undertake in creating stronger, safer and more connected communities, adding immeasurable value to life within the Shire of Gingin. **

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme was to RECOGNISE. RECONNECT and REIMAGINE volunteering.
  • RECONNECT - To what is important by giving our time to help others and ourselves.
  • RECOGNISE - To celebrate and thank volunteers for the vital role they play in our lives.
  • REIMAGINE - How we can better support volunteers and communities they help.
The Volunteer Recognition event was possible due to support from businesses, Community Associations and groups. Funding was received from Volunteering WA and Lotteywest to recognise volunteers in National Volunteering Week (NVW). The Shire of Gingin, Woodridge Community Association, Ledge Point Community Association and the Lancelin Community Resource Centre successful NVW grant recipients, joined their grant funding to be able to acknowledge all volunteers within the Shire of Gingin. A huge thank you to the Gingin Recreation Group who applied for this funding, however were unsuccessful.
To apply for NVW funding each of the grant applicant groups was required to gain support letters from local community organisations; a total of 20 letters. To provide the opportunity for community members, associations and businesses to be a part of this event, and to thank a volunteer, there was a raffle draw with gifts donated. 120 gifts were drawn to thank a volunteer. Invitations for volunteers were provided by each grant funded organisation with 320 volunteers registered to attend. Without a collaborative effort from all people involved, this event would not have occurred.

Closing the borders! - When Australia closed its borders on 20 March 2020, it triggered an unprecedented demographic event - a flow of overseas migrants slowed to a trickle overnight. By September 2020, Australia had experienced the first quarterly decline in population on record, and if the trend continues, will see the first decline in annual population change since World War 1. An event such as this has myriad flow-on effects, some of which can be quite unexpected.
