LCA offers a festive vaccine clinic in Redmond

With live mariachi music and free tacos, the Latino Community Association turned its vaccination clinic in Redmond on Sunday, May 30, into a festive occasion – and 149 people showed up to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
Some people who showed up at St. Thomas Catholic Church were already vaccinated, but came to encourage a family member to get their first shot. They lined up in the sun and waited to sit with one of two pharmacists from Bi-Mart to get the free vaccine. St. Charles Health System supplied the doses of Pfizer vaccine, approved for adults and youth as young as 12, and the Oregon Health Authority organized the event with LCA. Each patient received a card with an appointment for the second vaccine dose in June.
“At first, I had some doubts about the type of vaccine,” said Kevin Rivera (right), a construction worker in Redmond. “There are lots of myths.”
But with time and more research, Rivera decided to get the vaccine at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds. He and his family showed up today to support his wife’s aunt.
Margarita Cardona (left) of Redmond had a powerful reason to get vaccinated, she said. She listened to her daughter, a nurse, describe her work with critically ill COVID patients in Seattle. Cardona got her Pfizer doses at the fairgrounds, and when she developed a slight fever, chills and a sore arm the next day, her boss gave her time off from her landscaping work to recover, she said. She came with family members who were deciding whether or not to get the shot.
“We didn’t have much time to go other places,” said Jasmin Piedra (right) of Redmond, a 10th grader at Redmond High School. She came to support her mother, Leticia Rodríguez, who was getting the vaccine. Jazmin, who has a friend who caught COVID, got her shots at school because, “If adults can get sick, kids can get it too,” she said.
Eric Cardona (below, in the middle) hopes he can get a seat reserved for vaccinated fans to watch a Portland Trailblazer's playoff game, he said as he waited in line. And he had another reason: “My sister and I want to go to Mexico this summer.”

LCA thanks Mariachi Los Temerosos for bringing their wonderful music from Hood River and El Amigazo food truck of Redmond for serving up hundreds of tasty tacos with condiments and traditional Mexican aguas made with tamarind, hibiscus and rice.

LCA also helped organize a vaccination event in Madras on May 7, when we partnered with Jefferson County Public Health to vaccinate 174 people at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. More vaccine clinics are coming up in Prineville and second-dose clinics in all three cities. See the section below about clinics in June and July.

Latinos in Central Oregon are getting vaccinated

Sarah Kalivoda, an epidemiologist with the Crook County Health Department, compiled these statistics that show vaccination rates for the Latino, or Hispanic, and non-Hispanic populations in Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties. With some exceptions, Latinos in every age group across our three counties are getting the vaccine at rates equal to or greater than non-Hispanics. In a few cases, the percentages show over 100 percent vaccinated. This happens because the tables use a population estimate from 2019, the most recent available. That estimate could have undercounted the true population.

Young teens welcome at LCA’s summer clinics

The Latino Community Association, with the Oregon Health Authority and county health departments, will offer COVID-19 vaccination clinics this summer that include the Pfizer vaccine approved for ages 12 and older. Appointments are preferred, but not necessary. Vaccines are free and medical insurance is not required.

LCA moves Gala de Oro to a new location

Last year, when the pandemic shut down live events, the Latino Community Association canceled our 20th anniversary Gala de Oro fundraiser. This summer, we will revive our gala and celebrate our 21st anniversary at a brand new venue, the Seventh Mountain Resort in Bend, from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. on Friday, July 23.

We invite you, our friends and supporters, to join us for Latin American cuisine, margaritas and dancing to Dina y los Rumberos. Hear about the good work our team has been doing in response to the pandemic and contribute to our mission to empower Latino families to thrive in Central Oregon.

LCA helps working families survive loss of income

Shouldn’t all workers receive a stimulus check to help make up for income lost during the pandemic? We at the Latino Community Association certainly believe so. But not everyone in our communities received this help. As soon as we learned this, in late March of 2020, we created a fund supported by local donors and foundations to award relief checks to local workers in economic need who did not qualify for federal payments or unemployment benefits. Since then, our fund has had three rounds of funding, the last of which we just completed. When we opened our application period on March 29, the response was overwhelming. We received 257 applications in just a few days.

Fortunately, we were able to help 43 of our applicants submit requests to a larger statewide funding coalition of which Latino Community Association is a member, the Oregon Worker Relief Fund. This amounted to $71,060 in aid. And with our local funds, we were able to direct $187,500 this round to another 182 workers in Central Oregon. To date, our COVID-19 Immigrant Family Relief Fund, and the generous people and institutions who have contributed to it, has distributed $422,500 in relief to 407 workers in our region.

These Oregon bills impact immigrant families
contact your legislators

Many of us believe our federal immigration laws need reform and a way for undocumented immigrants to achieve legal status and citizenship. While we wait for Congress to act, Oregon legislators have introduced several bills in the state legislature that would impact the lives of Oregon’s immigrants. Most are in committees and now is a good time to write to your state representatives and express your opinion about these proposed laws.

Sanctuary Promise (HB 3265)
Bars law enforcement or a public agency from denying services or benefits to individuals on basis of federal civil immigration actions, asking about an individual's citizenship without a connection to a criminal investigation, or providing information about an individual in custody to federal immigration authorities.

Universal Legal Representation (HB 3230)
Provides nonprofit legal services for people who need to present a case or a defense in immigration courts.

Cover All People (HB 3352)

Renames Health Care for All Oregon Children as Cover All People program and expands Medicaid eligibility to adults who would qualify for state medical assistance except for their immigration status.

Leave No Worker Behind (HB 2819)
Allows qualified individuals to claim the earned income tax credit on their Oregon tax form under their individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN), in lieu of a Social Security number.

Farmworker Overtime (HB 2358)

Prohibits employers from permitting or requiring agricultural workers to work in excess of 40 hours in one workweek unless workers are compensated for overtime hours worked.
