What We've Been Up To

Wow, it’s crazy to think that we’re almost halfway through 2021! With vaccine rollouts and spring in full bloom, things are looking hopeful once again. Hopefully, we’ll be able to resume striking this summer, in the meantime, check what Fridays For Future Calgary have been kept busy with this month, and see how you too can take action!

City Hall School Presentations

On April 23rd and May 6th, we had the amazing chance to give presentations to some grade four and five classes through City Hall School. We went over how the idea of climate strikes grew from one person to a worldwide movement, along with how they as individuals can create change in their communities. Our presenters had a ton of fun, and we think the students did too!

Friday’s For Future YYC is Endorsing Stop Ecocide!

Stop Ecocide is a global campaign that is focused on establishing ecocide as an internationally recognized crime. They are working with lawyers, researchers, politicians, and small nation-states with the goal of amending the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court to include ecocide, to “provide a simple, effective deterrent for those in positions of responsibility, enforceable within existing criminal justice systems.”

We encourage you to check out the campaign for yourselves.

Calgary Municipal Election Organizing

Our team is currently in the process of meeting with Ward and Mayoral candidates for this upcoming election in October to ask about how they will address climate and social justice issues in our city. Stay tuned for more details!

If you missed it, you can watch part of it here.

We will continue to keep our presence online strong, and we invite you to keep striking digitally with us! Stay tuned!

Bees are essential to the protection and conservation of biodiversity in nature. Bees account for 70 to 80% of total pollination done by insects, making them a key to biological diversity. Their role is critical but too often overlooked, and the bee population has suffered a massive decline. Such a sharp drop in their numbers affects the existence of other dependent species and the biodiversity that they have long safeguarded. Find out more about what you can do to protect our bees!
There has been so much opposition to coal mining across Alberta in the last few months, and it put pressure on the UCP government to reinstate the 1976 coal policy. Keep voicing your opposition to coal mining and continue the fight to protect the eastern slopes! Resources linked here.
The following is a post by Climate Strike Canada:
It is important to us as a group with a sizeable platform that we extend our voice and amplify calls for support and help worldwide, especially since we are operating in a Global North country that is complicit in the Palestinian struggle. We wanted to discuss why we need to talk about it, as a climate justice group, and as…

Free Palestine!

Most of us have been following the current events playing out in Palestine and the solidarity protests that have developed as a result of the atrocious acts carried out by the Israeli government. Although a ceasefire has been announced, this does NOT mean that the continued expansion of illegal Israeli settlements and the displacement of the Palestinian people are at a pause. We must continue to show our support for Palestine until Palestine is truly free!

Take a few minutes to demand governments and organizations to condemn the Israeli government and to support Palestinian sovereignty and liberation.
