Welcome

Care Leavers National Movement is a growing movement of young people from House Projects across England and Scotland. We have four main aims:
  • Share successes
  • Raise challenges
  • Peer evaluate House Projects
  • Test new ideas
You can find out more about the CLNM on our website here

Our engagement with the CEO of NHP

Mark, CEO of The National House Project (NHP), talks to young people and involves them in the decision making process within the charity. Mark meets with the Chair of CLNM every month and will be attending our residential in August. Read about Mark's latest catch up with CLNM below.
Update from Mark

Peer Evaluations

'Peer Evaluation' is one of our four aim's and we are excited to have started work on it over the past few weeks. It is important to The National House Project that young people's views shape the development of House Projects across the country and peer evaluations is one way that we can ensure that happens.

We have teamed up with Matthew at Partnership 4 Young London, a specialist in research, policy and campaigns to train our representatives as peer evaluators. Training was delivered at a residential in Crewe where 15 young people came together for a collective purpose of learning to be peer evaluators. We spent three days together learning from Matthew and each other, sharing lived experiences of their journey through care and developing their independence and confidence.

Young people have 100% designed the evaluation framework which will focus on three of the seven ORCHIDS (Ownership, Responsibility, Community, Home, Independence, Direction, Sense of Well Being), the things young people achieve in the House Project.

Sue Hammersley, Director of the NHP who opened and closed the training event said:

"The training event was absolutely fabulous, the young people were so focused and really embraced the learning throughout the whole weekend"

We are looking forward to interviewing other House Projects across the country over the next few weeks as part of ourpeer evaluation fieldwork.

Digital Poverty Campaign Update

Our Digital Poverty Campaign is currently with MP Craig Tracey awaiting a date for debate in Westminster Hall. Once the date has been agreed we will share our briefing pack with MP's wanting to contribute to the debate.

Our key asks to MP and Secretary of State for Education, Gavin Williamson are:
  1. A change to Section 2 of the Statutory Guidance 2018 so that local authorities are required to provide digital connectivity as part of their ‘local offer’ for a minimum of 12 months when young people first live independently.
  2. Care leavers to be offered a digital device between the ages of 16-19.
  3. Learning experiences for care leavers to enable them to operate effectively and safely when using digital devices and data up to the age of 21.

Our plans for the next 3 months

  • We will start and finish our peer evaluation fieldwork, this involves interviewing 20 young people from across ten House Projects in the UK and holding a number of focus groups.
  • We will plan our residential at YMCA Lakeside for August 2021.
  • We will hold our first CLNM meeting in Midlothian Scotland.
  • We will continue to identify themes through CLNM meetings that support improvements throughout House Projects.
