IUIS Vice-President Address 2021
Scientists identified a path forward to stop the COVID-19 pandemic; now, government leaders need to enforce it.

Immunology science has achieved what would have been unimaginable just a year ago. Less than 12 months after the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic, scientists developed, clinically tested and obtained regulatory approval for vaccines that are remarkably protective against COVID-19. Moreover, real-world data shows that these vaccines are more protective than anticipated based on clinical trial results.

In a field where innovations are scarce, and the success rate is low, the fact that several vaccines have been approved in multiple countries is a scientific breakthrough. This was made possible because of major advances in scientific knowledge by the time the pandemic hit. Key discoveries in the mechanisms of antigen presentation, adaptive immunity, and drug delivery permitted the development of several vaccine strategies, all of which are protecting against severe COVID-19.

The swiftness of the vaccine effort was also made possible thanks to the work of Chinese scientists who isolated the virus that caused the pandemic and identified its genomics sequence enabling scientists across the world to start the vaccine development process.

While scientists have done their share and identified a path forward to stop the pandemic, government leaders are struggling to complete theirs.  The pandemic continues to rage in many countries, where vaccines are nowhere to be found.
Wealthy and middle-income countries have purchased 85% of the vaccine doses, while the world's poorest nations may not be able to vaccinate their populations until 2023. These numbers are frightening for both humanitarian and selfish reasons. Humanitarian reasons because the countries with the most vaccine shortages are often those with the most vulnerable healthcare systems, putting their population at higher risk of suffering and death. Selfish reasons because viral spreads also increase the likelihood of the virus mutating and becoming resistant to current vaccines, endangering people worldwide -- including vaccinated ones --.

Thus government leaders must act swiftly and creatively to enforce the path paved forward by scientists. In addition, leading officials must enhance the manufacture and distribution of vaccines equitably throughout the globe before the virus evolves in a way that fatally undermines the scientific prowess of this past year.

Successful IUIS-ALACI-ACAAI Immuno-Colombia online course
While originally planned as an in-person course, the 2021 IUIS-ALACI-ACAAI course “MECHANISMS AND APPROACHES TO IMMUNOTHERAPY FOR CANCER AND CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASES” took place virtually from April 5 to 16, organised by the Universidad de Antioquia in Medellin/Colombia (Luis F García, Gloria Vásquez, Gloria I. Sánchez) and the IUIS Education Committee (Rosana Pelayo, Michelle Letarte, Clive Gray, Dieter Kabelitz).
Prior to the online course, the 49 selected participants from 19 countries (see charts) had to study pre-course material provided on the Immunopaedia platform. The course consisted of one 45 minute lecture by the international faculty, followed by questions and answers and five short presentations by participants each day. A novelty of the course was the post-course research projects where participants in groups of five or six had to work out a research proposal on a topic selected by a mentor (who were the faculty members). Three weeks later, each team presented the result of this joint effort in a final session.

The faculty members judged the presentations, and each member of the first and second prize-winning teams for best presentation received substantial financial support to enable participation in an upcoming IUIS-related congress or a lab visit to learn new technologies, etc.
Overall, this virtual course has been very successful, despite the obvious lack of personal interactions (coffee breaks, joint dinners, etc.), a hallmark of IUIS-EDU in-person courses. Once again, the Immunopaedia team has been instrumental in the preparation and running of the course. Last but not least, we gratefully acknowledge the exceptional enthusiasm of all faculty speakers and students!

Report of FIMSA Immunology Course 2020

The virtual FIMSA Immunology Course-2020 was conducted by the Indian Immunology Society
8 – 10 October 2020. The course was held on the Zoom virtual platform. Professor Sunil Arora, President of Indian Immunology Society and Course-Director, sent out a call for this course through various websites in July/August 2020.
A total of 389 delegates registered for this course from various countries, mainly from India. The course faculty included stalwarts in the field of Immunology from the USA, Australia, China, Jap
an, Taiwan and India. The course curriculum was designed to cover topics related to Innate Immune responses on Day-1, Adaptive Immune responses on Day-2 and clinical Immunology on Day-3. Overall, twenty-seven lectures were divided into nine scientific sessions and four keynote sessions, including one special keynote session on COVID-19.
The course was well appreciated for its comprehensive coverage of Immunology, from basic fundamentals to recent advancements in the field. Feedback was obtained from all the participants through email, and an e-certificate issued to each of the registered participants.
The FIMSA course was managed without any funding support as it was self-financed with very nominal registration fees from the participants, which covered the expenses incurred.
