New Leah's Pantry Products
Leah's Pantry has new products including colorful magnets that reinforce some of the concepts taught in Food Smarts and Around the Table curriculums. CalFresh Healthy Living Funded Partners are eligible to receive these items at no cost.

Ancestral Recipes Cookbook & Live Cooking Demos
Ancestral Recipes: From My Grandma’s Kitchen To Yours has been designed in collaboration with Borrego Health's patient community in the eastern Coachella Valley. Cookbook recipes, based on MyPlate, were tailored to ensure ingredients are available and affordable. The cookbook is currently available in English and Spanish. Dr. Ann Cheney from UC Riverside School of Medicine presented this cookbook with a community member in the May CFHL, UC Town Hall. Don't forget to follow their Facebook page for updates and more resources.

CFHL, UCCE Madera County Teams with UC ANR Master Gardener to Present Virtual Parent Garden Workshop
On April 21, 2021 CFHL, UCCE Madera County Educator Elizabeth Lopez and UCCE Madera County Master Gardener John Duran delivered a virtual Parent Spring Garden Workshop to 30 Madera Unified School District (MUSD) parents in Spanish and English. The MUSD Parent Resource Center (PRC) facilitated the virtual workshop promotion and registration. Fresh From the Garden curriculum taught during the workshop was further supported by the distribution of garden kits that included soil, radish seeds, a pot and a garden coloring page for children. The Master Gardeners generously donated soil and tomato plants.
This workshop was received with enthusiasm by the parents, one parent said, “I learned how to plant, grow and take care of herbs to cook and I really liked it.” This was a wonderful opportunity to expand parent’s knowledge of gardening and awareness of the direct nutrition education and policy, systems and environmental changes in MUSD supported by CFHL, UCCE.
The virtual Parent Spring Garden Workshop was a collaborative effort coordinated and planned by: Master Gardner Coordinator, Denise Cuendett, Master Gardener John Duran, CFHL, UCCE Manager Karina Macias, Supervisor Kristi Schultz-Sharp and Educator Elizabeth Lopez.

LIA Collaboration Leads to Community Benefits with Trained Promotoras
Stanislaus County LIA collaboration led to 20 trained promotoras. The following story was released in Western Ag publishing, Imperial Valley Press, Morning Ag Clips, and Yoloeats.
When local promotoras - volunteer health workers - team with CalFresh Healthy Living, University of California Cooperative Extension educators, magic happens in school gardens. Trained by Ceres Partnership for Healthy Families in Stanislaus County, promotoras encourage children to eat well by growing their own produce in school gardens. Read more.

Pruning for Healthier, More Productive Tomatoes
CFHL, UCCE Nutrition Educator Susan Lafferty has provided detailed information on pruning. Please see below.
Some controversy exists over whether tomato plants should be pruned, but regular pruning is a great way to give your tomato plants a good start in life. When a tomato plant is pruned properly, airflow is improved, all the foliage receives adequate sunlight, and the plant is able to photosynthesize more efficiently, boosting growth and fruit production.
One major benefit of pruning tomatoes is disease prevention. By removing the lower 6-12 inches of leaves you can help protect the plants against pest and disease problems. With fewer leaves, pruned plants are less dense. The leaves dry faster so they are less susceptible to the diseases that need prolonged moisture to develop. Plus, fewer leaves make it easier to spot insect pests that might otherwise be hidden by a thick canopy. Read more.

Duties/Responsibilities: The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a full-time administrative Faculty position as the SNAP-Ed Coordinator. This position will coordinate and oversee the administration of the University of Nevada, Reno Extension statewide Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP) nutrition education and policy, systems and environmental (PSE) change interventions in implementing counties under the supervision of the Associate Director of Extension. The SNAP-Ed Coordinator will have the primary responsibility for the coordination of SNAP-Ed work plan among Extension specialists, county-based staff and faculty, sub recipient agencies and subcontracts; application submission, and reporting in accordance with SNAP-Ed grant requirements; and will assist with planning, guidance, and evaluation.

SNAP-Ed Connection Success Story Submission Process & Template
- CDSS and FNS have developed a new SNAP-Ed Connection Success Story Submission Process & Template designed to assist all LIAs in writing and submitting national SNAP-Ed Connection Success Stories. The stories typically begin as PEARS submittals and must be reviewed and chosen by the State Office for SNAP-Ed submission. The file is available on the CFHL, UC Publications SNAP-Ed Connection webpage.
