Solutions for extreme heat as India battles COVID-19

A webinar organized by NRDC, the India National Disaster Management Authority, and partners on May 17, 2021 titled "Strengthening Preparedness and Response to Extreme Heat Through Heat Action Plans and Cool Roofs" highlighted current actions reduce the health risks of extreme heat and respond to the COVID-19 crisis. New Report: Climate harms to health are widespread and costly

A recent National Resources Defense Council (NDRC) blog by Dr. Vijay Limaye describes a new report, penned by NRDC and the Medical Society Consortium on climate & health, about valuation of climate-sensitive health impacts, including those from extreme heat, in the United States. Those costs total to hundreds of billions of dollars and are typically ignored in climate damage assessments. Read the report >

UK Met Office to introduce new extreme heat warning

The purpose of the extreme heat warning is to increase awareness of the negative impacts of heat on health, infrastructure, and other services for the public across the UK to enable better preparedness to maintain life, wellbeing, property, and livelihoods. Learn More >

Miami, Athens and Freetown to appoint world’s 1st Chief Heat Officers

Miami-Dade County, Florida, Athens, Greece and Freetown, Sierra Leone will appoint the world’s first-ever Chief Heat Officers, as part of the Extreme Heat Resilience Alliance‘s City Champions for Heat Action (CCHA) initiative. Learn more >

Extreme heat forms across Arabian Peninsula after record Russian heatwave

Extreme heat has now developed across the Arabian Peninsula following a record heatwave across the Russian Arctic earlier this week. Temperatures are reaching nearly 50 °C (122 °F) and are expected to spread further east towards Pakistan and northwest India this week. Learn more > 

European State of Climate Report 2021 highlights heat stress

The report is unique in providing every year with a consistent methodology trends and patterns of heat and cold stress across Europe. Further, this year’s findings align with an unusually warm winter in northern Europe and no long-lived heatwaves across the continent.  Check out the full report >

New legislation in Qatar provides greater protection to workers from heat stress 

As temperatures soar across the Gulf region, Qatar has adopted new rules to protect workers from extreme heat, including expansion of prohibited summertime work hours, upper heat level thresholds, annual health checks, mandatory risk assessment. The decision was informed, in part by an assessment led by the FAME Lab from the University of Thessaly. Learn more and check out the assessment
