Marching Band Lesson 101 - How to prepare for Band Camp
All CMB students

There are some things all CMB students can start doing to get ready for Band Camp in July. It will be here before you know it!
  1. Be active. You are now a part of a physical activity. Your activity level throughout the summer must be more than sitting on the couch playing video games! Please find ways to get your body in motion – evening walks in the neighborhood, hold your instrument at playing position, climb Kennesaw Mountain, lift light arm weights (especially baritones), go for an afternoon run around your neighborhood, etc. These efforts will add up and make your opening days at Band Camp much easier.
  2. Get out in the sun and get used to working in the heat. Marching Band is an outdoor activity, thus most of our rehearsals are in the elements. Please get acclimated to working hard in the Georgia summer heat. And remember to hydrate!
  3. Visit this website (password: popehsband) for updated music, drill, and movement videos.
  4. Practice your instrument - Warm-ups/technique/show music/Star Spangled Banner/Fight Song. Having this music memorized going into Band Camp will help ease you into the week.
  5. Understand the Football Field - The faster you understand the football field and coordinate sheets, the faster we can put more drill on the field. Click HERE and HERE to watch videos that you should familiarize yourself with. They outline terminology used to find your dots on the field, as well as show you examples of how to read your coordinate sheet.
  6. Ultimate Drill Book App - Please download the "UBD App" to your phone for Band Camp. You will be given an individual code to access this essential application we will use throughout the fall. Click here to familiarize yourself with the app.
  7. What do I need for Band Camp?
  • Working Instrument (please get any repairs done throughout the summer months)
  • Tennis Shoes, Athletic Shorts, and T-Shirts/Tank-Top
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Water Jug (provided for you)
  • Sheet Music (can be printed from band website)
