National Volunteers Week video

During the recent National Volunteer Week, DELWP compiled a selection of stories about volunteering groups and projects to celebrate and promote the work being done by environmental volunteers.

SGCS founding member Eulalie Brewster is the subject of this video posted on the DELWP website and Facebook page.

Working together

Two organisations auspiced by the SGCS, Plastic Free Bass Coast and Bass Coast Climate Action Network, have been working together to achieve positive results for the local community. PFBC boomerang bags made 100 draught stoppers, from recycled fabric, to donate to the BCCAN's 100 Cosy Wonthaggi Homes day.

BCCAN's aim is to make contact with people who are eligible for state government programs that give them support with their energy costs but don't know about them or are unable to access them.

The event was to have been run on Saturday, 29 May, but was postponed due to the COVID Lockdown. Keep an eye out for updates on Facebook.

The PFBC team pictured from left to right are Aileen Vening, Lynne Gower, Lois Dwyer, Michelle Ward and Wendy Steendam. Gero Gardener, not pictured, is also part of the team.

Shell Museum Walk and Talk

An interested group of twelve members gathered at the Bunurong Environment Centre last Tuesday to hear the Shell Museum curators, Joan Hales and Janet Davies, talk excitedly about their display, the beginnings of the shell collection and what goes on behind the closed doors of that narrow curating room.

It all started with two collections donated by Inverloch families and since then has been added to and displayed for all to see. Although housed in the Bunurong Environment Centre, the Shell and Marine Display is owned by us, the people of Inverloch, and is beautifully displayed behind glass shelves, except for the touch table and the wall display set on fishing nets. The shells and marine life are from all over the world, but the large back shelf shows local shells found from our immediate coastline.

Joan and Janet work closely with others at the Museum in Melbourne and are well respected for the research they do.  Here is a link to Joan Hales' research paper: Recolonisation of rocky reef area at Inverloch, Victoria.

Project Updates

Screw Creek Boardwalk

We are pleased to announce that our application to Bass Coast Shire Council for a Community Grant was successful and we have been awarded $5000 towards the Screw Creek Boardwalk project.

At present the formed paths in the Screw Creek Reserve finish at the fishing platform. We have for some time planned to construct a boardwalk to complete the access to the Townsend Bluff Road area which will be the link to the new Inlet Waters Estate. Now, the only non-vehicle access for residents of the Inlet Waters Estate is along the main Inverloch-Venus Bay Rd. There is a high traffic volume on this road and a narrow verge, especially over the Screw Creek bridge which presents a safety risk for walkers and bike riders. Completion of the link will also provide further walking access for other residents exploring the Screw Creek reserve.

It is anticipated that work will commence when the decking plank material can be supplied. The manufacturers engineers are working on repairing a machinery failure. It is expected the product will be available in July-August.

World Environment Day - Saturday, 5 June

Reimagine. Recreate. Restore.

World Environment Day 2021, being hosted by Pakistan this year, calls for urgent action to revive our damaged ecosystems.

Ecosystem restoration is a global undertaking at massive scale:
  • repairing billions of hectares of land so that people have access to food, clean water and jobs
  • bringing back plants and animals from the brink of extinction
But it also includes the many small actions everyone can take, every day:
  • growing trees
  • greening our cities
  • rewilding our gardens
  • cleaning up trash alongside rivers and coasts
