Rutger Bregman wrote a long piece on Effective Altruism!

We are very happy to see that Rutger Bregman (a well-known Dutch historian and author) is promoting the ideas of Effective Altruism! He even took the Giving What We Can pledge. The article he wrote included Peter Singer's philosophies, moral intuitions and Effective Altruism. Read (or listen to) the article via the button below!

Safe the date! - Policy lunch event 22 June 12-1pm

Are you working in policy or plan on doing so in the future? Do you want to know about promising career opportunities? Do you have ideas on how EA Netherlands can make a larger impact in this cause area?

On June 22nd, we are facilitating a discussion with experts about long-term policy-making and improving institutional decision-making in the Netherlands and elsewhere. As a group, we will subsequently brainstorm and identify new opportunities for these cause areas, particularly in the Netherlands.

We are welcoming Rumtin Sepasspour from the Centre for Study of Existential Risk, where he helps national governments manage global catastrophic risks. Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will explain how they do workshops to improve institutional decision-making. We have multiple lightning talks to show what people are currently doing in policy work.

In order to keep away from intro level EA discussions, we hope all participants go through some interesting resources beforehand. Material to read/watch will follow soon.

Donating

How to donate most effectively?

Once you have decided that you want to donate some of your money to charity, it can be difficult to figure out how you can spend your money in the most effective way. Luckily, there are multiple organizations that guide you to the most cost-effective charities. We listed the most important organizations below!

We are very happy to direct you to Doneer Effectief, a website and helpdesk service (NL/EN) developed by EAN. The website guides you to the most effective charities to donate to, and provides information about ANBI (tax-deductibility) status. The charities are categorized in four different cause areas: health and poverty, animal welfare, climate and the future. The helpdesk welcomes you with all your questions regarding effective donations and legacies.

Doneer Effectief incorporates the information of EA’s best sources: GiveWell is an independent evaluator focused on finding worlds best giving opportunities for fighting extreme poverty and promoting health for the poor. The Life You Can Safe curates a group of effective non-profits with the same focus. For selecting the most effective animal welfare charities, Animal Charity Evaluators is the place to go. The research reports of Founders pledge substantiate the best choices for giving to the climate as well as future profits. The EA funds also offer a broad selection of the best giving opportunities for you.

Ready to take the next step? Join the Giving What We Can community by either giving a donation or taking the pledge.
