Obituaries

The obituary below was published by the Highland Village.

It is with sadness that we share with you the passing of Agnes Campbell, a kind and caring woman who loved her family and friends. Many of you may not know Agnes personally but may recognize her husband, Donnie Campbell.

Donnie has been a long-time supporter of the Highland Village and Gaelic culture in Cape Breton. He is also one of only a few who have performed at almost all of the Highland Village Day concerts. Agnes has been behind the sense for over 40 years helping Donnie. From getting him stage ready for shows and everything in between.

Agnes also leaves behind her daughter Anne Louise, who worked as a summer student at the Village, and their son, Stephen. We’re thinking of all of Agnes family and friends who will dearly miss this wonderful lady.

If so, we want to hear from you!

Bothan Dhùn Éideann

Froilig tar-sgrìobhaidh | Transcription Frolic

THE CAPE BRETON GAELIC FOLKLORE COLLECTION (on Sruth nan Gàidheal) is a treasure trove and we are inviting you to come admire the jewels with us.
For the month of May (Gaelic Awareness Month in Nova Scotia) we are hosting an asynchronous online transcription frolic to collectively catalogue the songs in this amazing audio collection. We are particularly looking for people to listen to the songs and transcribe the first lines of the chorus and the first verse and determine which kind of song it is.

If you would like to give it a go, please read the instructions HERE first.

Then head over to this Google Sheet to get started HERE!

We are so grateful to Dr. John Shaw for the fieldwork he carried out to create this collection, and to StFX University for continuing to house it online. At the end of the month, Dr. Shaw will join us for an information session where we will review our collective work and explore your questions about the collection.
An dòchas gum faic sinn air loidhn' sibh!
