News This Week: 5/23 - 5/29

“This week, Texas passed a “trigger ban” that would ban abortion in the state almost immediately if Roe vs. Wade is overturned. The bill will now head to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk for signature.

  • This is just the latest Texas attack on abortion. It comes on the heels of the governor signing a six-week abortion ban into law last week.
  • Eleven states have trigger bans in place already: Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Utah.

On Wednesday, Congress introduced the Reproductive Rights are Human Rights Act. This bill requires the State Department to include the status of reproductive rights in nearly 150 countries as part of its annual human rights report for Congress and the President.

  • In 2018, the Trump administration eliminated this comprehensive reporting as part of its effort to reduce access to comprehensive reproductive health care.
  • The Center endorsed the bill alongside 144 other human rights organizations.

Coming Up

Appellate Court to hear arguments on Tennessee 48-hour mandatory waiting period (June 2)

  • Last month, the full Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals allowed a law to take effect again that forces patients to wait at least 48 hours to have an abortion after receiving state-mandated counseling. The law had been blocked since last year by a lower court ruling.
  • These June 2 arguments will be on the merits of the law and will start at 2pm ET. Streaming will be made available here at the time of the arguments.

Did You Know?

People in rural areas of Texas often must travel for hours to reach the nearest clinic. For example, a person in Corpus Christi would need to drive over 150 miles to reach an abortion clinic and would have to make that trip twice due to the state’s law that requires patients to make an extra trip to the clinic for biased, state-mandated counseling.
