2021 Regatta Q & A
This is primarily intended to help our many novice families, however, due to VASRA changes in 2021, please make sure you're familiar with how things will work beginning tomorrow at Sandy Run.

Q. How much time should I plan to make sure I can get from the parking lot to the marina in time to watch my athlete race?
A. For the first race, plan to arrive at the offsite parking lot at South County High School at least 1.5 hours before your athlete races. Anticipate lines to get on the shuttle bus. The bus ride will likely take 20-25 minutes from the school to the drop off location near Lot D at Sandy Run. It is a 15 minute walk from the trail located in the back corner of Lot C to the Grandstand area near the finish line.  If you can carpool and have one person drop most people off before heading to the parking lot, you can save money as the shuttle bus charges $5 per person each way.

Q.  How will I be able to pick up my athlete immediately following the race if I need to go back and get my car?
A.  Athletes can ride the shuttles back to the offsite parking.  It is not known if they will also be required to pay for the ride back so be prepared to pay if they ride back with you.  If you need to go back and get your vehicle, recommend sending one person back to get the vehicle as soon as the race is over and then return to pick up the rest of the group to include your athlete.  If you cannot get back immediately after they race, I do not think anyone will complain if your athlete lingers a bit waiting for your arrival to pick them up. NOTE: the shuttles will begin one hour before the first race and will end running from Sandy Run NLT 1 hour after the end of the final race.

Q.  I broke my leg and cannot walk from Lot D to the Grandstand.  Does that mean I cannot watch my rower?
A. No it does not.  If you require handicap parking, it is available to you in the marked section of Lot C on a first come, first served basis.  If you require handicap parking, please email regatta@vasra.org a few days before the regatta to let them know.  There is a fee shuttle that is handicap accessible that will take you from Lot C to the finish line.  You will then be required to walk about 20 yards to the Grandstand. The fee for that shuttle is $3 per person each way.

Q. I’ve never been to Sandy Run marina except for dropping of my athlete.  Where do I go?
A. The shuttle bus will drop you off near Lots C and D.  Enter Lot C on foot and near the back right corner from the entry is a trail in the woods that descends the hill and intersects with another trail.  Turn left and follow the trail until you see the finish line shed and grandstand area. The trail does have some spots of incline and decline- it is not perfectly flat and may be difficult to traverse for those with mobility problems. Wear appropriate footgear and layers in case you get warm on the walk over. The walk from Lot C to the grandstand takes about 15 minutes. LBSS traditionally sets up using lawn chairs and blankets near the edge of the water in front of the Grandstands.

Q. What should I bring with me to watch the race?
A. You will not be able to see much of the race from the Grandstand area but the last portion near the finish line is always exciting.  Some parents bring binoculars to get a view of the boats in the distance. Recommend bringing a bottle of water and maybe a granola bar or snack, cash for the concession stand, a foldable lawnchair that is lightweight and easy to carry (unless you plan to sit in the grandstand), sunscreen, sunglasses or a hat, tissues or toilet paper in case the porta potties run out, and hand sanitizer. If you choose to sit in the grandstand, the seats are concrete and there is no overhead awning so plan accordingly. And don’t forget your cowbells, noisemakers (no whistles), spirit signs, and Bruin pride!

Q. Who can come and watch the regattas?
A. Anyone can watch the races.  Family, friends, fellow athletes, the mailman, anyone and everyone is welcome. There is no limit of spectators per rower or team.

Q. Will I be able to see my athlete when he or she is done racing?
A. Because we are trailering boats in this week, the athletes will likely continue to row once they cross the finish line and head back toward Sandy Run boathouse where they will pull their boat from the water and haul it up the hill to the trailer. Parents and spectators are not allowed near the boathouses or docks to reduce congestion for athletes.  When you athlete is done with all of that, you will be able to give them a hug and high five. When we enter the “heats” phase of regatta season, they will dock at the Point and will be able to come visit you in the Grandstand area. We’ll explain what the Point is in our new parent meeting next week.

Q: What exactly are the "regatta shirts"?
A: The t-shirts are regatta specific and sold by VASRA. Popular sizes of the t-shirts do sell out quickly and it’s unknown if they made smaller quantities for this first regatta with t-shirt sales.  In past seasons, many of our athletes bought shirts for each (or some) of the regattas.  Parents or grandparents have made regatta shirts into quilts after rowers graduate!  If you have the option to send cash with a morning rower (if your athlete rows in the afternoon), that’s a good option to ensure your athlete gets a t-shirt!
