Wildwood Resort Paint Out
by Renée Bates
It was a "Richard Schmid" kind of day, Sunday, May 16th, when eight Chestnuts made their way to Granville, Tennessee to enjoy a day of painting at Wildwood Resort and Marina on Cordell Hull Lake.

While Karen, Sheryl, and I had previously visited the resort and surrounding countryside, including “Chestnut Mound”, it was new to other painters. Owners and sponsors of the upcoming Painting to Preserve Art Show and Sale, Natasha and John Deane warmly welcomed us, and John toured us around the property, showing different vantage points from which to paint. Natasha had planted lovely wildflowers along the bank which found their colorful way into some paintings. John pulled out "Drowsy Maggie", their boat, at Sheryl’s request. Her painting showed off its sleek lines. John Deane said, "It has been a dream of mine to have painters at Wildwood", explaining that he grew up around artists.  Four of us had a delicious brunch at the resort’s Lakeside Restaurant while sprinkles passed.

Arriving ahead of the rest, Dale Finley said of the experience, "It was so satisfying to spend a few early Sunday morning hours immersed in the tangible stillness on the grounds of the Wildwood Resort and Marina. A perfect time and place for a period of rest and contemplation and a welcome break from the ambient noise of cities and neighborhoods. An occasional fish breaking the water's surface and fellow artist Gayle Levee settling in her chosen spot along the boardwalk the only sounds interrupting the hush. An ideal setting for a memorable Sunday morning service."

Cheekwood Update
This is a notice to all Chestnuts who may have painted at Cheekwood this spring. It is in reference to their "En Plein Air" program whereby Cheekwood invited local artists to paint the grounds and to submit those pieces to be juried to display in a show in the Frist Learning Center from June 5 to Sept 5. The works were to be suitable for hanging and the drop-off was on Tuesday, June 1, in the Frist Learning Center (it's easier to enter thru their side gate at 113 Cheek Road and tell the gate person your reason and need to get to the Frist Center). All of the Chestnuts who conducted demonstrations at Cheekwood during May are strongly encouraged to submit those works. We are investing in building a fuller, long-term relationship with Cheekwood. Thank you for your support in this.

If you don't choose to participate in En Plein Air, the iconic landscapes of Cheekwood could bring a nice variety to the offerings for the art show at MBA this June.

JUNE is a beautiful time to paint at Radnor in preparation for our show in November! Reminder that Chestnuts are welcome anytime the park is open to capture its beauty. Around the big slough, rare plants such as white water crowfeet can be seen blooming around the edges of the water. Newly found plants such as water penny wart are thriving around the lake's edge. Adult wood ducks can be seen with their newborns around the lake's edge early and late in the day. Trumpet vine begins blooming this month. Great crested cormorants arrive and stay for the summer months.

We will continue to have organized paint outs in the coming months, including the opportunity to capture a full moon, so watch for more details of fun events coming soon. Please remember to stay on the trails and leave no trace. Thank you for coming out to paint! --- Donna Brumbergs & Brigitte Hubbard 2021 show chairs

Speaking for the Trees

The Nashville Tree Conservation Corps and The Chestnut Group have joined forces to raise awareness of the beauty trees bring to our Tennessee landscapes. The artists are donating almost half of all proceeds from the sale of the art in this virtual show to  preserve the local tree canopy, which is so critical to a healthy natural environment.

To purchase a painting, please email judson.newbern@gmail.com who will connect you with the artist to arrange acquiring the artwork.

Thank you for your support!
