NEXT UP AT CICOLAB

31 May — Howard Rheingold: Smart Mobs + Collaborative Writing + BlackPaper release (V2)

Smart Mobs, a book by Rheingold published in 2002, true to form presages decades early so much that’s transpiring in the socio-digital sphere today, and points the way to our discussion about the social norms of tomorrow addressed in the BlackPaper (see below).

Smart Mobs Politics (2005 MIT chapter by Rheingold)

Applying the ‘smart mob' lens to the challenge of establishing social norms in the web 3 tech space, we highlight the continuum between ‘smart mobs’ patterns and ‘classic examples’ as they are still being wrought out in political arenas on the ground (F2F), online and in the media.

We’re keen to check out what emerges from the edges between the Smart Mobs Rheingold wrote about years ago in looking to augmented decentralized swarms and their geopolitical and existential shifts and impacts in the immediate future.

‘smart mob media’
‘smart mob politics’
’smart mob economy’
‘smart mob communities’
‘smart mob tech’
etc

BlackPaper final draft (V1.3) (Last call for comments)

"Synopsis: Recent events have shown us that those too extreme for the mainstream technology platforms like Facebook and Twitter are increasingly turning to encrypted technologies to organize, disrupt, and corrupt. Many current communities utilizing encrypted technology are unprepared for basic moderation, much less organized infiltration attempts. Because of this, we fear the lack of well-developed decentralized moderation and control mechanisms in the blockchain space, combined with financial incentives that reward bad behavior, will engender radicalism at unprecedented levels — especially when triggered by agenda-driven actors armed with big budgets and sophisticated tools. This paper discusses why we failed to anticipate this entirely obvious situation and argues for the immediate funding and development of a solution around governance, focused on inclusion and best practices for establishing social norms in order to welcome all interested parties who wish to take advantage of powerful decentralized technologies while protecting our communities from losing themselves to bad actors."

CICOLAB PROCESS FLOW

Toward the Wisdom Stack V2 (Minimum Viable Collaboratory Algorithm)

Continuing on our path to effective real-time sensemaking, we refine our process flow in a symphony of augmented Peeragogy toward attaining the DKR envisioned by Engelbart. Essentially we are redefining the Wisdom Stack and preparing for an updated release in the coming weeks.

Inspired by the CICOLAB Process suggestions below (see video wrap on Collaboratory Process, May 24), Lauren created a board to empower CICOLAB members to take more stigmergic action on their own, as a next step towards permissionless innovation. This board is meant for everyone to contribute to, change, and help complete.

CICOLAB UPCOMING

JUNE 7
CICOLAB Wisdom Stack
Commons Summit & Pattern Jam

Through extensive discussions within Open Global Mind’s Stewards working group, Charles and Lauren along with OGM-CICOLAB fam Jerry Michalski, Judy Benham, Pete Kaminski, Matt Saiia and Vincent Arena have been gathering extensively several times weekly for many months to lay out substantial groundwork in connection with a stewardship framework put forth by Jordan Sukut and Lionsberg to augment global knowledge sharing and decisionmaking. A central component of this agreement template has emerged under the working title Generative Commons in an initial draft. OGM Bootstrap, CICOLAB and other sovereigns join in an emerging coalition to energize and co-evolve this integral approach to collaborative innovation.

Also on June 7, we anticipate releasing an updated version of our Wisdom Stack.

Message from Ken Homer

Dear Cicolab friends,

Some of you know that my work focuses on conversations — specifically developing the conversational competencies required to collaborate more effectively. Integral to collaboration are clear agreements and setting healthy boundaries. When we feel those agreements have been broken or that our boundaries have been violated in some way, the best remedy is often a conversation for complaint. This kind of conversation was not something that was modeled in my family of origin and, based on my experience as a coach and consultant, it’s rarely handled skillfully in organizational settings. If you are interested in developing this core conversational competence, the following post may be helpful:

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/conversation-complaint-ken-homer

It’s about a 15-minute read. If you choose to read it, I would value any comments or feedback you might have to help me improve the reader’s experience. It's also hoped you will come away with something tangible and practical that can help you the next time you need to hold such a conversation.

Thanks in advance,

Ken
FREE AND SAFE IN CYBERSPACE
8TH EDITION
JUNE 24-25TH, 2021
Hybrid Online/Offline - Geneva and Zoom
https://www.free-and-safe.org/8th-edition-2021/

In Cyberspace, we can’t really choose between freedom and public safety. It is a “both or neither” challenge, whose solution is key to bringing the democracy principle into the Digital Age.

New international standards and certifications are needed to foster the wide availability and adoption of IT for human communication that finally upgrades democracy to the Digital Age by finally realizing a global democratic digital public sphere that maximizes online all our democratic values, such as civil rights, freedom of assembly, law enforcement and national security, through innovative win-win solutions.

Next June 24th, the Trustless Computing Association will gather top experts to improve and finalize the governance and the binding socio-technical principles of a new international democratic governance and IT certification body that can sustainably promote cyber peace, global democratic governance and economic development.

Alex’s Dream

“I wanted to say in the [Systems Innovators Clubhouse] room about this dream I had the other day where it was like 5 years in the future and collective intelligence was a buzzword and I was guiding some leader through some techniques to build it.

“I was pointing to cicolab talking about some pioneering term and explaining the history and he was like "yeah yeah I've heard about cicolab" and I remember picking up this slight annoyance of him feeling late to the game.”
