May 2021

Hello <<First Name>>,

The days are getting cooler here and the projects are becoming more hectic. Mosses + Marshes is gaining pace with a collaborative work now showing in a touring exhibition that kicked off in the UK in mid-May, while other sound works are in the pipeline for a sound walk Andrew Howe is installing in the Mosses (UK) very soon. Then there's the schedule we're working to for the Mosses + Marshes book we're planning to publish by October.

Mosses + Marshes postcards

VIEW >>  A few weeks ago, a series of Mosses + Marshes postcards (above) developed by Andrew and I became part of a touring exhibition put together by the Arts Territory ExchangeUn-Boxing opened at Shelf, Cambridgeshire (England) with aTE founder, Gudrun Filipska. Read more about where this dynamic exhibition is headed and see some of the postcard works we developed on the ecoPULSE website. Scroll down to hear one of the Marsh soundscapes developed for the postcard works - Gated Sunrise.

VISIT >> As you may know, some of the material gathered for Pulse of the Wetland and Mosses + Marshes was recorded at the property, "Burrima" on the western edge of the Marshes, near the Northern Nature Reserve. The Macquarie Wetlands Association now has a website up and running to take bookings for visits to the property. I'm still planning a 2 day/1 night deep listening field trip to "Burrima" in September. So if you're interested in being part of that, I'm giving ecoBYTE subscribers first option on places - and they are limited spots. I'll have more details in the June ecoBYTE, but I'm taking names now (scroll down to the button below).

The Drip near Mudgee

LEARN >> The field recording course I've been developing, The Power of Sound kicked up a notch this month. We're now almost finished, with the final module (post-production) in the process of being delivered after a successful field trip to The Drip near Mudgee (pictured above) a week ago - such a stunning site and a great group of amateur sound recordists to work with made it the perfect day. There's now information about the course on the ecoPULSE website as I prepare to offer it further afield in the second half of 2021 and into 2022.

SHARE >> One of the events coming up in the ecoPULSE calendar in the next couple of months is a speaking opportunity at the Listening to the Lachlan event at Forbes (10-11 August), a gathering bringing together speakers and delegates to share their experiences, wisdom and research of the Lachlan River and catchment. I'll be talking about Sonic Territories: Galari, which taps into everything this event is about. I'll provide more details as we get closer, including the abstract.

WATCH >> Back in March, Andrew Howe presented Mosses + Marshes to an audience of about 100 at a webinar hosted by the UK-based Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), called A future for wetlands: The Mosses and Marshes project | West & East Midlands. It's now available to view online - WATCH HERE.

READ >> This month I've included a few lines from one of my favourite poems recently published by fellow 2020 artist-in-residence at the CORRIDOR project, Jessica Raschke. It was a highlight of my 10 days on site there to spend a few days with Jess. I'm thrilled to see her work in print, with her poem Seeing in layers really striking a chord. I've added a link to the publisher's site if you're interested in buying a copy.

LISTEN >> The meat ant soundtrack recorded on the floodplain near the Marshes recently shortlisted in the Sound of the Year Awards in the UK, has been picked up by an Australian radio program on 2BOB Radio in the Manning Valley (Taree), called Lost And Found Sounds. Meat Ant Attack will be broadcast on Monday night, 1 June between 9-11pmLost and Found Sounds is a weekly program exploring experimental audioscapes. If you're keen to listen, it's streamed online before becoming available for on-demand listening.

MACQUARIE MARSHES FIELD TRIP EOI

Every landscape is layered -
not by rock

not by sediment
nor dirt

but by lives
and their histories
and universal sounds uttered
like never before
