Goodbye MAY and hello summer!
MAY we get back to normal now? MAYbe. Being fully vaccinated I’m finally feeling fairly confident. Covid cases in this country are dropping significantly. I have started live piano lessons again and just finalized details for our recital next month! It will take place on June 13, at 4pm at the Latvian Trinity Lutheran Church in Tosa. Ten of my students will be performing everything from Ragtime and Blues to Chopin and Beethoven – it is open to the public. Join us! I have even been out to dine in a few restaurants this month. It sounds kind of crazy that this is a big deal. BIG hugs to friends are a BIG deal!
I had a two - count ‘em, TWO - dinner dates with Sheldyn Himle. She is a dear friend and remarkable lady who was being honored, on her birthday, in the City of Milwaukee Public Employee Relations as Chief Court Administrator at the Municipal Courthouse for her innovation, public service and dedication to equity and justice for all. (Read more at the link). We went to celebrate at Sam’s Place Jazz Café, which was wonderful. I’ve been anxious to try the place out. Great jazz by Eric Jacobson and company. It was kind of emotional being out for live music again. And shrimp and grits – yes, please! It was my first venture out in 14 months. Holy moly – who would have thought? Sheldyn and Petra popped over for a yard party a few days later. I cooked up some yummy salmon with couscous, with salad, wine and cheeses. And beer. And laughter. And live conversation. Ahhhhhhh – I needed that.
Guitars for Vets is a nonprofit org serving veterans suffering from PTSD. G4V was founded locally in 2007 and helps veterans through the healing power of music. There are chapters all over the country. They provide private lessons and when the program is completed the veterans earn their very own guitar! Tommy Knuth, who works with G4V organized the group ‘Therapy Band’ to play at mom’s senior apartment. They rocked the joint! It was the first concert and public event at the facility since the lockdown. When Alice Konkel and I delivered our art guitars, we met Constance Tenhawks. Turns out they were co-workers back in 1979! What is it about stars aligning and connecting with people? I think that’s a thing. She is a cool artist and does interesting media and abstracts. She paints rocks. I asked her where she get them. She makes them. Of course! Out of concrete – very interesting. I think we MAY be kindred spirits. Alice and I also just completed our other annual art donation. With pal Marcia Hero we painted and decoupaged watering cans to be auctioned off for Literacy Services of WI Online Trivia Fundraiser. They have a patron who is matching donations up to $10,000. You can double your money for a good cause. Our trio of artists are going to be part of a trivia team on June 8th. Hope I still have some working brain cells left after being shut down for over a year. Highly doubtful. I was inspired to create some new digital flower art with photos from Alice's Amazing Garden!
There is some housing news to share. My step son Adam and Denae have had an accepted offer on a house! The papers aren’t signed yet, so details to come. We’re very happy for them. Double congratulations to Denae who just finished her nursing degree and started a new job at Aurora St Luke’s South Shore! All while taking care of Sophia. When we got the news, Tom and I went out to celebrate at Clifford’s Supper Club on 104th and Forest Home. The joint has been around longer than I have. Fish Fry is available all day – every day. I had the Jagerschnitzel with mushrooms and onions. Tasty! And they make a really good old fashioned. On a sadder note, my brother Maris and wife Donna sold their house. The good news is that in only one day on the market they had almost 40 showings and 10 offers. They accepted a really good one. Soon they will be parting and moving on to new separate lives. Everyone is very amicable about it. I wish them both good memories, new happiness and peace.
I rearranged some furniture in the rec room. And I finally finished organizing my closet. Some little steps have big impacts. One step at a time people.
